Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
Hello out there! It's been a long while since I've posted, but if you wouldn't mind helping a gal out with a question, I'd appreciate it! (I also hope I'm in the correct forum - if not, please move mods )
I've got a 1989 2500 Suburban with a original stock 350. It's got over 262,000 miles and is in need of replacement (hubby doesn't want to rebuild). However, I want a 454. It came as an option from the factory, and it will then match my 454SS (even tho it's got a 496, it's still a BBC). So, what else has to be changed, other then the TBI? The brackets? Alternator? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Everything! Every F'ing thing and I'm not kidding. If you have cubic dollars go for it. I've found in trying to restore the K2500 I'm working on that the parts aren't available like they are with a 350. If you can find a wrecked 454-equipped truck and rebuild the drivetrain for your Sub that would be a viable option but it still won't be cheap.

Realistically I think you'd stand a better chance installing and tuning a 383 crate engine for your Sub than a BBC transplant. Plenty of people on this site have stated the troubles they've had tuning a 383 for their trucks like this, but I still think it would be much easier than dealing with a BBC and all the attendant parts needed for an install.

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
I'm working on a couple of 4x4 burbs that never came with BBC and lots to do for conversion..
having owned several big block GM sedans, I fully understand there's no replacement for displacement so why not more cubes in a SBC? I've been eyeing something like these for possible HP and torque upgrades; BluePrint Engines GM 400 C.I.D. 460HP Dressed Crate Engines BP4001CTC1 BluePrint Engines GM 400 C.I.D. 508HP Dressed Crate Engines BP4002CTC1 and thinking about one of these for a nice 4 speed auto upgrade.. 12021 - 200 4R Transmission 400-500 Horsepower Price: $2199.99 otherwise like previously stated, if you're looking to do a BBC conversion, you're best off to find a donor complete.. good luck!

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
Well, I show my truck at AACA events, so it needs to be as it came from the factory or a factory option. So a 454 was an option and I'd like to have it, since the original owner was talked out of it by his friends. lol
Thanks for the links, Of course, I'll check them out and show hubby and get his thoughts on the suggestions too Appreciate it!

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
Couldn't get a 454 in a 4wd 'burb until new body style in 92. Swapping a 454 into a truck isn't that hard. I swapped many 454s in trucks and a few G-bodies. Only major difference is the TBI itself, but they can be found on evilbay or junkyards...

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
For some reason thought was 4wd. They came factory like that, best bet is search craigslist and see if you can find a complete one...

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
I referenced the complexity of converting from SBC to BBC in my 71 and 72 4wd burbs..
not that's the case here, but I'm opting to replace stock 350 SBC with HO 400 SBC for install simplicity and generous HP and torque gains..

I see why you thought that because I mistakenly put a R in front of the 2500 sorry to confuse things!

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
big block+ 4L60E transmission= a bad time.
As for showing the truck, nobody will know what size the engine is, they only know small or big block by looking. You can build a 427 small block that looks like a 283.

I"ve got the stock transmission - would never buy a 4L60E. No thanks!

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
On modern classics I would want a complete donor for any engine swap

Re: Old engine is tired, but I don't want another 350
GM 383 HT would be a perfect replacement
HT stands for heavy truck. I put one in mine and is was an amazing upgrade!
