6.5 L internally or externally balanced?
I had a question from someone who came across a 6.5 L engine in a 92? Suburban. He wants to know whether it is internally or externally balanced. I thought someone here would know.
He said it is a gas engine. I didn't even know they made one that size. Last edited by vince1; 07-28-2019 at 11:09 AM. |

Re: 6.5 L internally or externally balanced?
The 6.5 is a diesel engine. It replaced the 6.2 in 1992. I believe it's externally balanced.
The 396 BBC would have been roughly 6.5 liters, but those weren't offered in 1992, and they were never classified using the metric system (at least not in the US).

Re: 6.5 L internally or externally balanced?
I don't remember a lot of engine choices in a 1992 Suburban.
5.7L in the 1/2 ton 7.4L gas in the 3/4 ton and 6.5L TD in a 3/4 ton

I guess he will look at the block number. Maybe someone changed it out from a diesel. He said on the same decal as the 6.5 it shows vacuum line routing. I think he said it has TBI.

Re: 6.5 L internally or externally balanced?
If it has a distributor, it's either a 5.7 (350) or a 7.4 (454). That might be the easiest way to tell if he's not really familiar with engines.

Re: 6.5 L internally or externally balanced?
He's had lots of 350's but just thought with the 6.5 decal that maybe they made one he didn't hear about. I don't know if he even has it home yet to take a good look at it but I think we can assume it is a 350.

Re: 6.5 L internally or externally balanced?
If the engine has been replaced it could be almost anything. I had a 92 Buick Estate Wagon that I left the diesel badges on when I replaced it with an Olds 455. It surprised a lot of people.
