Will it fit?

What I mean by fit is, will it pretty much bolt right on.

I have a 56 gmc but the front clip was changed to a 55 or 56 Chevy at some point. I’m going to stick with that since finding 56 gmc front clip parts has proven quite difficult. I did manage to find a 57 gmc hood tho. I figured I would ask the experts here if it’s going to fit. I know it’s different as far as the two ribs that run the length of it but did gm change the dimensions from the previous year? It seems that Chevy and gmc use the same hood latch so I’m thinking that’s ok.
If the hood wasn’t 2 hours away I would just run up there and measure it but a 4 hour round trip only to find out it doesn’t fit would bum me out

Thank you

Re: Will it fit?

LOL, with you not at you my friend. The way more common thing back in "the day" was to take the GMC hood off and throw it in the pile and put a 56 Chevy hood on. It should bolt right on unless there is some difference in the panel that the hood latch is in.

Good thing is that you might come out ahead on this as there is always a market for the 56 Chevy hood. I'd keep it until I actually decided that Yes I did like the GMC hood on it as you might not like it as well as you thought when it doesn't have the garrish GMC grill under it.

My ongoing truck projects:
48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

That’s what I have heard but I’m just not sure why ppl would switch it over. I guess styles have changed or just mine is not the norm. I like how the gmc hood has the cut out in the front for the emblem and since it’s actually a gmc it works for me. So there isn’t a difference in the dimensions from 56-57?

No difference in size. They are the same size and will bolt right on.

Re: Will it fit?

The thinking back in the 70's and 80's was that the GMC front end was too gaudy and cluttered and that the hood wasn't that attractive. Gaudy and cluttered seems to be in now.

Still your Chevy hood should be worth as much or more as a GMC hood in the same condition and you might get a GMC hood an some boot to go with it from someone wanting to go the other way.
