Rear End
I've got a lot of play in the rear end on my '76---- pretty good "clunk" when putting it in drive from park, or drive to reverse.
I've found a rear end out of an '88 that's supposed to be 5 lug, in decent shape. My question is, will the '88 rear end fit under my '76 in terms of spring perches, lug patterns, etc. Anyone made a swap like this? BTW---my truck is short step side 1/2 ton.

Before you go swapping out rear ends, i'd first check the u joints (if you haven't already). Thats usually a major culprit of the notorious clunk! If it is in fact the rear end i would think a 73-87 1/2 ton rear would be plentiful in the junk yards down there. I'm not sure on the 88' model for a direct swap. I would think you would run into shock placements, brake line sizes, etc..? Usually the newer body style meant they changed a bunch of other stuff up. Good luck tho!!

Have to start moving spring perches and shock mounts... Also don't know if 76 was standard or metric brake lines, but I know 88 is metric... My 79 was metric.

I believe they changed the springs pretty substantially for the GMT400 platform. I'm not positive but I wouldn't get my hopes up. And if the diff. is wearing out it should be making a pretty noticeable noise, especially at low speeds - Turbo Hydramatics can shift pretty hard (especially reverse, at least on a 400) and U joints are worth checking.

Pull the cover and check the backlash between the ring and pinion gears. They are probably ok. A lot of times it's just worn spider gears causing the slack, and they are easy to replace.

gotta make spring mounts shock mounts brake lines etc....an it be to wide...if ur gonna swap rear ends try to find a impala ss rear end

My rear end had a ton of play, it would bang hard when shifting out of park. New spider gears fixed it right up, pretty cheap, and easy to install.

My 81 has a 12 bolt that is not metric in the rear, fronts are.
