Horn only works if wheel is loose.

Been scratching my head on this one, maybe someone has seen this before...
72 c10 with Chevy van tilt column and grant steering wheel. Got my horn contacts in order and tested with everything worked. Tightened down the wheel and the horn button will not ground out. Unplugged the connector to the column and connected test light to check for ground. Nothing. I can loosen the wheel and once it backs off enough, I can test by shorting the horn contact wire to the shaft and it’s fine. However if I reinstall the wheel, OR with the wheel off, I can push down, hard, on the turn signal cancel cam, and I lose the ground. I can see the spring loaded plunger making contact on the cam, so its gotta be below that. Any idea on this?

Here's a thread with some pretty good pictures that may help you.

Thanks for the reply, I found that thread while I was searching for some answers. Beings that it is a van’s tilt, and I have no idea if the turn signal cancel cam was from that, or the trucks column. (it’s been too many years) but it seemed to not fit right, so I trimmed down the cam about 1/16” so it won’t smash down on the bearing as much. At the same time, that causes the contact ring to touch the screw for the turn signal lever, grounding the horn circuit. But, nothing a little rtv glue and electrical tape couldn’t fix. We’ll see how long that last before the horn blares and I have to figure out the real fix!
