Kill Switch Ideas

Hey Folks,

Curious does anyone have any suggestions on how and/or where to install a Kill Switch on an '82 C-10?

I had the same question a while back and somewhere I got this and kept it till I was ready to do it. I haven't done it yet but intend to sometime.

Someone responded to cut the big purple wire under the steering column, sure enough that was it. So to lengthen it, obviously add in the correct guage wire, wire nut the two ends, then connect the two remaining ends in and out of the switch. Use a quality on/off simple toggle switch. You can hide wherever you want, of course you may need to add a good length of wire, depending. I would actually like to move mine somewhere under the glove box.

Generally they will just bust the tumbler and start it with a screwdriver in a few seconds, But with the toggle in the off position, it wont start. But someone who has time and is not nervous, could look under there and see the switch. So hide all, even the wire nut.

I’ve put a bunch of them in I splice a toggle switch into the hot wire on the HEI or coil it will turn over but won’t start. I have hid them inside the cab in the grill the one I have know is mounted to a dimmer switch under the carpet below the fuse box it’s invisible

You can also ground the tach lead at the hei. It'll crank, but won't fire

First you need a locking hood. On a 70's truck if you can open the hood you can hot wire it in 1 minute. The locking steering wheel may slow somebody down but I hear they break easily. On the 80's trucks it's just a matter of breaking a window or using a Slim Jim to open the door to open the hood If the truck has a lot of value you might as well spring for a real alarm system.

and as mentioned here and there, best way is a garage.. anything left outside without constant surveillance is vulnerable to theft..

most of these ideas only slow down the amateurs or discourage the petty thieves..

as these trucks steadily rise in desirability and value, thieves will follow..

why the heck would you use wire nuts on automotive stuff ? ? ?

Hidden breaker switch for the battery is the way to go. I've got one on my Rx-7. You would never know where it was if I didn't show you. That will 100% stop someone from breaking in and driving it away. If they're determined enough to break in and tow it out, then that's another thing altogether.

I have a kill switch for my fuel pump lead wire. I also installed a GPS tracker on the truck.

Bein in the security business I was able to work with one of our vendors and get a nice, discreet unit.

If you're using a spark box e.g. MSD, Mallory etc. they have wires that can be grounded for theft deterrent. The wires change whether you use the "White Wire" or "Magnetic Pick-Up" Trigger but it's the same technique for both.

I had the Grant No Wheel No Steal setup on my 67 Camaro. I'll probably put one in my 66 C10. It takes about three seconds to insert a key, twist a knob, and the steering wheel pops off. A steel security cover locks on and you take the key out and you're set. No way to steer the vehicle. Either take the steering wheel with you or stash it behind the seat.

Were you able to find a good spot for the GPS tracker? I've got one, but I have to put it nearly in plain sight for it to get a signal.

Absolutely brother. Its made by Skybitz. They make stuff for fleet tracking applications.

This unit is the small hardwired unit that can be placed under the core support (where I have mine) or under the dash. Totally discrete. It has several inputs as well as a plug-in module to disable the start function.

Has real-time data, can tell me speed, relative speed (in traffic compared to google maps data) and will notify me if the truck is moved without the key in the "run" position.

We all spend a lot of time and money on these trucks, and for 200 bucks this was a no-brainer. Plus it keeps my 16yo in check.

Yes, the Skybitz module pretty much will link with satellites pretty easy. It has this bad ass 3M adhesive on the back and it will stick anywhere. I put it under the core support lip next to my battery.

thanks chief!!!..does it require a monitoring fee or any after purchase costs...and does it have power source just in case someone unhooked the battery?...I'm gonna look it up tonite when I get to work...

we use a couple of different types of AVL systems at work to track mobile equipment, machines, trucks, etc.. but they are subscription based services and tracking is hosted on their websites..

the key it seems would be to find the most robust owner/operator stand alone system that wouldn't require any subscription fees..

gentlemen, start your googles!

Haha, so true. There is a monitoring fee every month for Data Streaming. But its minimal.

And I'm not on here to sell anything, just part of the convo.

yep...if I had my own terminator I wouldn't worry bout my truck...haha..
I know all out piv's at work have a tracking system on them ..but its in plant tracking..we've got antennas all over the building but they can tell where each one is at all times..
