Found a "local" BBC....looking for your guys input
Ok guys, well like the title says, ive found a BBC 4 hrs from here that a guy is selling. Heres the Craigslist ad and I will type out all other info i have received from the owner.
http://siouxcity.craigslist.org/pts/2227245587.html Upon finding the ad i immediately contacted the owner and made sure it was still available. He replied back saying it was. Heres all other info ive gathered on the engine thus far. Its a 361959 block from he thinks 1978 with 2 bolt main caps. It has the "781" oval port heads on it and the bottom end is all stock, however it was balanced with a new balancer and flexplate, all machine work was done in Tea, SD by J&L Premier Machine. It has Speed Pro hypereutctic 10:1 domed pistons in it. The other parts he listed for me off hand were that it has an Edelbrock performer RPM intake, Miller roller rockers, Comp Cams Magnum 280 camshaft with matched springs, lifters and pushrods. He also told me that he built it last summer for a pulling truck and only has 5 pulls on it and break in run time on motor. He also said the motor has a lot of "gear reduction", whatever that means. He also said the balancer and flexplate are SFI approved for pulling, so hes not sure whether those would work for something on the street or not. He will send pics of the engine tonight and im also asking for a video or 2 of it running if hes able to do videos. Hes willing to sell the whole motor complete for $1,700. Does that sound fair to you guys? Im just wanting to make sure im getting something thats not going to turn into problems for me shortly after i get it. Any other info i should ask him before taking the dive and buying the engine?

Re: Found a "local" BBC....looking for your guys input
depends
if the seller willing to let you pull the oil pan , and the main caps and pull the heads to have a look.. or if it will run start it..?? it has nothing special.. other than a balancer and flexplate.. and the pistons 1700.00 is a lot for a bbc core.. does he have reciepts of this work(machineshop) does he know if it's a cast or forged crank,, 3/8 or 7/16th rod bolts?? 2 bolt mains , so I'm willing to bet cast ,3/8th with 10 to 1 pistons (to high for pump gas) and oval port heads.. was any work done to the heads(head job, new valves, etc) I think you'll be better off with a bbc 500.oo-700.oo long block core... If you get the guy to agree on pulling the pan/main caps, heads, bring someone that'll know what they are looking at.. for 1700.oo it being a deal will depend on reciepts, and inspection.. otherwise you might be buy'n a 1700.oo bbc with a spun bearing or rod knock.. to give you an idea. I payed 700.oo for a running 454 4 bolt, forged crank/7/16th rod engine.. good luck Last edited by stich626; 03-02-2011 at 01:31 PM. |

Re: Found a "local" BBC....looking for your guys input
1,700 for a running 454 sounds like a darn good deal to me. The problem with buying a used motor is you never really know what you're getting. If I were in the market for a 454, I'd probably buy it. I'd probably tear it down though to check the bearings.
Doesn't sound like too great of a "pulling" motor, but based on what you wrote, sound like an all around good street motor. I had a comp 280 in a 454 and I loved the idle. It was a dog off idle to 3,000, but screamed after that. Stich beat me, but man, $700 for a running BBC? I wish I came across those types of deals around here...in my CL/ads, a running BBC is usually over 2k

Re: Found a "local" BBC....looking for your guys input
The guy did send me some pics of the engine so heres the 5 or 6 pics he sent me.
He also said he is going to get some batteries for it and make a vid of it running so i can hear how it runs. Im still going to have a friend go look at it in person to see, hear, smell and check it over.
