Brake lights/box thing(What is it)

Hi all, I have been having some brake light problems, they wont come on when I press the brakes. I look under there and all the fuses are right and all the wires are in that are supposed to be (I Think). My question is , what is that little box thing, I remember mine had a spring and a plastic thing in it but it shot out and got lost and I was wondering what it was/What is a quick temporary fix to get me to the junkyard/parts store.

PS it has two green wires coming off the box

Isn't there a switch located on the brake pedal arm with a pair of wires coming out of them, and a threaded adjustment? These switches go bad with age, I've replaced a few, try adjusting that switch for a temp fix. Most part houses should carry the brake light switch.

I even tried moving the switch by hand and pressing the brake. What do the white and orange wire do? I see they go to a switch but why would they use 4 wires to control the brake lights?

Also can someone post where all the switches and/or problem spots are when its comes to brake lights.

The switch is located near the brake pedal arm. It contacts it and either pushes the plunger in or allows it to release. To test, remove the plug on the switch and connect the two wires together with a jumper wire. If the lights light, the switch is probably bad.

Don't go crazy looking for a special switch as it's the same one in almost every Chevy from the 50's to the 80's and beyond. I've had better luck with used switches than with new ones.

Hey all, My youthleader from my church helped me fix it. The power wire had came out so the switch wasnt getting any power. He has a 68 GMC I think he said (What a cool youthleader). So I referred him to this board, maybe he will come on soon.
