Re: posi front and rear

I use too run Dana Power-loks(pre-loaded posi that acts like a locker but isn't) front and rear. Ran like that fer 10yrs with great results off road. Great Posi for sure, nice and tight. Now I'm locked front & back...1ton swap and all..

What axles do you have under truck? And what retailer did you get the posi's from?

I don't have a posi up front... yet. I would love to have an air or electric actuated one some day. Does it make it hard to steer with the front locked up like that?

Dana 44 front and 12 bolt rear. Front posi from a jeep not sure what brand was used with 4.10 gears $100 bucks spent way more in rear for eaton posi and gears but setup is amazing in snow.

Only on dry pavement. In snow and mud,or other poor traction situations where 4wd is needed,it will feel fine.

That's pretty sweet I want to do posi front and rear someday. I need to do the 3/4 or 1 ton swap first though haha I bet that it handles great in the snow and mud!

How's the front posi feel at highway speeds?

Re: posi front and rear

Rehashing an old thread here but considering adding a front posi carrier to the Dana 44 in my 72 Blazer now that I'm off to Montana - how's the steering in the snow/ice with such a unit? Locally, I hear the driving can be squirrely w a front posi and I should stick with my open front and posi rear. Thanks, Pete

Re: posi front and rear

I've installed an eaton e-locker in my front dana 44. Modern Dodge Power Wagons use one in the front but it is only active in 4WD low.

I'm overhauling all the drivetrain (G80 in the rear, OH+ twinstick for transfer case) in my Suburban and I haven't driven it yet. But experience tells me a posi or locker is going to want to drive straight head, even in a corner.

I do not know how much bias a Torsen or TrueTrac has but I would be inclined to use a gear type unit if it was for on road use.

Thanks - this would be for occasional use in snow/mud in a slightly lifted but otherwise true-to-original K5...

Re: posi front and rear

95% of our 4WD use is deep dry sand of Texas beaches. Front and rear lockup doesn't bother me too much there.

We do own a vacation home in Durango. I've had to use 4WD driving (slowly) down I-40 but at least it's straight. Highway 550 has been a little hairy, on more than one occasion.

Not sure if you drove 550 when it was hwy 44 and one lane in each direction - that was often dangerous!

Re: posi front and rear

We've been going for 19 years now. So yes, it use to be a slow trip up that highway. More than a few times we would travel up to Pagosa and head west on highway 160 and bypass Albuquerque, Cuba, Aztec all together.

Re: posi front and rear

I have a 69 K10 witha Dana 44 Powerloc and a 12 bolt with an Eaton Posi. The Dana 44 Powerloc came out of the rear axle on a 70 or 71 Scout. I have been driving this truck since 1987. If the hubs are locked in on dry pavement, I do notice the steering is a little different on a high speed corner. Most of the time, I don't even notice any difference. I don't drive the truck in the winter anymore, but I did drive it for the first 14 winters that I had it and never had a problem on snow covered roads, it didn't matter if I was in 2wd or 4wd.

Thanks! My K5 is a real dog on hill climbs (350 w a TH350 and 33" BFG's) and thinking if I go through the trouble of replacing the gears (stock 3.08?) for something like a 3.73 I may just add a front posi unless it's tough to steer in a slippery situation like a snow filled ditch....

Re: posi front and rear

In my 1 ton I have a detroit locker in the rear that has a tendency to pull the vehicle sideways in the snow, but the power-loc in the front helps that out

Im running a Grizzly locker rear and open front in my sticked long box. I haven't spun in this truck "unintentionally" but i have in shorter wheel bases as highway speeds. Had to reupholser the seat on one occasion.

Thanks Steve - I'll be up in Kalispell before months end. Is there a good local gear shop I can take my 72 Blazer to for a gear swap once I'm settled in? Pete

I'm in with the local 4x4 club, machinists, loggers, 4 wheelers and a couple mechanic friends at local shops. I can introduce you. Good small town people, many hobbiest and do-it-your-selfers. If you are into back country wheeling you'll enjoy it here. Blacktail Mountain Rec area is a nationally recognize designated wheeling area not to mention all of the State, Fed and Plum Creek land with thousands of miles of back country and logging roads through the mountains.

Good luck with the trip, congrats on the job, and we'll catch up when you're settled. And sorry for hi-jacking this thread -steve
