Transfer case Dilemma

So I got this 72' GMC 4x4. The transfer case is out of it and I just found out that it's a later, probably 85-91' 32 spline T-case with an adapter to mate it to a sm465 around the same year. The truck was originally an automatic, probably had a th350 in it. I'm just wondering if I should sell this stuff off and find a (69-72) t-case and adapter for a th350. I personally like a stick in a 4x4 but if I ever sold the truck do you guys think an automatic would be better? Anyways here's some pics of the t-case and adapter.

Re: Transfer case Dilemma

i don't personally think an auto truck is better or worse. i am sure there are people on both sides of the fence for an old truck.

your t-case is adaptable to many modern transmissions as well as the 465 it originally lived with. so, depending on your plan for the truck, that may prove useful. if you are considering a more OEM approach then the case you have will not work as well. it cannot as far as i know be hooked to a period TH350. it will also not work with the earlier 465s. the later 465 wont work with original location of the crossmember i dont think.

so if you want the choice of the modern transmissions keep it. if you prefer to keep it OEM, sell it.

Re: Transfer case Dilemma

I have limited off-road experience, but found auto's easier to maneuver around soft dirt. Plus my leg did not get tired. I live in southern california so most of my 4x4 stuff with friends was dirt roads or some sand of the desert.

I prefer sticks for performance, but in the end there are great reasons why people like both.

Re: Transfer case Dilemma

You first have to decide what you want in the truck....an auto or a 4 speed. Sounds like you're on the fence
