Thought I was buying one yesterday

I saw this Suburban for sale and stopped to look. It`s a`72 Custom Deluxe/20 400 a/c cargo door for $1,800...

I didn`t expect much from the body around here and not surprised that it was rusty. It was Medium Olive/White originally. The parchment interior was great althought cloth surfaces had been replaced in a not so great way.It even had a lift hatch & tailgate laying in the back.On the window it said it had 3.54s so I knew it was a dana.Looking in the fender well I got excited to see it was a coil rear.My thoughts were to roll it for fun for awhile, then I could always get alot out of parts:402/tH400,Coil Dana60,`72 overhead a/c,cargo doors, lift hatch,tailgate,door/side panels, under window trim, and on.It even had brand new exhaust and 16" radials.A pretty respectable big bruiser for the money.I`m funny about opening up doors and hoods without the owner present(right in his small front yard)and I didn`t feel like knocking, yet.I crawled under to have a look and see what motor it had.Just then the neighbor pulled in and started chatting.I figured I`d open the hood now.It has a later small block with all the later brackets, manifolds, etc. That just killed it for me.I usually prefer small blocks over big blocks, but that`s the biggest thing I wanted out of it.The guy`s a mechanic and drives it to work every week or so.I can get a number if anyone is seriously interested.

Re: Thought I was buying one yesterday

It sure is.It`s in good running condition.I like to start with cleaner vehicles for restoration. But,that`s me.It`s very restorable.I`d like it or a driver.I saw the 400 emblem and Dana coil rear and it got me going. It would be one cool wagon to cruise for $1,800.

Good thing I don't have Jay Leno's money. I'd probably buy everyone of these I see. I just like them.

This would make a sweet ride for someone.

Re: Thought I was buying one yesterday

thats only 300 more than i paid for mine, and it looks like it is in way better shape than mine was. mine looked and ran like crap when i got it for 1500, so that seems like a good deal to me.

Re: Thought I was buying one yesterday

Yes and no.The body on yours would be worth three grand to me back here. You sunny Californians may tend to overlook that.Mechanics are an easy fix compared to our rot.Only the rare totally pampered garage kept truck around here survives the test of time.
But...putting all in perspective,if I had "my" money I`d be buyin`this one.
I shouls see if he`d trade for my wrecker. He is a mechanic, afterall.I could see my 17 year old loving that thing. It`s nice to have a vintage ride you can give a kid without having a heart attack.I got my oldest son a`65 biscayne wagon that was a arge kept low mile survivor. He ran it 7 years. He was as popular with that as any Mutwang owner at his school.

haha, mine has more rust than you might think by looking at my pics. its got rusty rockers(pass. one is completely gone), from driver door back to wheel well is rusted out below bodyline, it has some roof and drip rail rust, some slight floor rust, and behind the rear wheel wells there is about an 1"-1.5" hole on both sides. so mine has some rust and isnt completely rust free.

Re: Thought I was buying one yesterday

Out here farmers bought the trucks and burbs with rubber floormats so they could open both doors and hose the dirt and mud out. I used to know a couple of guys around here who bragged about the rubber mats and being able to hose them out.
The end result was lots of rust in the floors.
