Carter Carb Identification

I plan to rebuild my carter carb but I can't figure out how to identify the size or model. I guess the number on the base plate is the serial number, is the one on the top the model number?

Thanks for you help

Re: Carter Carb Identification

The numbers stamped in the lower photo by the choke are the numbers to use. 2204 is the model # & 9655s is the ID #.

Re: Carter Carb Identification

Is that number a 9655 or a 9635 number? I believe that the #9635 carb number makes it a 625 CFM carb.

Re: Carter Carb Identification

Don't tell anyone, but the Edelbrock AFBs and the Carter AFBs are the EXACT same body of carb. They are both built by a comapny called Magnelli-Marretti and sold under the different company's names. I have a Carter AFB in my storage that is full of Edelbrock needles, jets, and acclerator pump parts. Actually the Edelbrock parts were slightly cheaper when I purchased them. The part numbers stamped on the parts is exactly the same, with the Carter numbers having a prefix number onthem also.

Re: Carter Carb Identification

Actually Carter is out of business, sort of. Federal Mogul bought them out and sold the AFBs under the Carter name for a while. I bought a Competition Series AFB 9625 [600CFM] about 11 years ago. Edlebrock is still selling and supporting the "Performer Series" (AFB) carbs. If you go to Edelbrock's tech dept, don't tell them it's a Carter. Since they didn't sell it, they won't support it even if it is the same thing. So pretend it's an Edelbrock. The 9625 = E-1405. the 625 CFM may be the E-1400.
The old Carter re-carb kit, #902-317A may still be available. The Edelbrock carb kit #1477 has the same stuff, maybe more parts, might cost more, but is readily available.
