Rebuilding a 12bolt rear in my 65

Ok so my 65 has a bad seal on the driver side which has made a huge mess inside the brake drum. Well I have pulled axle shafts out a truck before but never removed the ring gear or anything like that but I am thinking of rolling the axle out of the truck and rebuilding it completely from end to end new brakes and drums and all new bearings and seals then painting the axle and reinstalling it with new u bolts and the whole setup so being as I have never completely done this I am seeking advise maybe seeing if there is anything specifically I need to do or pay attention to

In that case, stay away from the ring/pinion and inner bearings. It is a major can-of-worms that is not for the average DIYer. If the inner workings need rebuilding, seek out a Professional. It's a very precise thing, requiring special tools and skills.

As far as the axles and brakes, have at it, but I would follow cdowns' advice and get a service manual.

So I think I am going to just put seals and bearings in the end but not worry much about removing the ring and pinion just giving it a look over I'm assuming it is mostly all good anyway I mean I drive the truck daily

Sure replace that ring and pinion yourself...its the best way to find out you set your shims wrong and end up eating the teeth right off the ring gear like I did.
