1991 K1500 transfer case, use care and feeding

1991 K1500 5 speed.

What does it mean then the TRANS indicator light is on? It is on with the truck cold and shifting the transfer case makes no difference.

Is there anything special about this transfer case, does it switching to 2WD about some speed?

Did some more digging. Seems the transfer case is all mechanical but there is a "Thermal-Gas Type Actuator" lockout in the front diff. Still not sure what the TRANS light means. On all the time could mean the actuator has the front diff on all the time or it could indicate failure.

I have not checked to see if the 4WD is actually working. Dry as a bone here. Maybe put it up on jackstands.

never heard of a truck that vintage with a trans light.....only thing that comes to mind is one with a 4L80, like if it gets too hot....

Thanks b454rat

I was working with just the cluster PCB installed. Might have been the shift light.

Making good progress.
