Original GM 8 track player (complete setup)

(SOLD)

I have decided to sell my GM 8 track player. This is a complete setup with brackets, amp and working speakers. The speaker grilles are in mint condition. I have tested the unit and it plays and shifts between tracks but will need a tune up. These are very hard to find. I have recently painted the unit and it looks a lot better than before (see pics in post #19). I will include a few old tapes in the sale. I have only seen one come up for sale over the past 6 years. First “I’ll take it” gets the setup. Asking a question will not hold the item for you.

$1,300 plus shipping

Any chance you could test the system out to actually see if it works? I'm interested, but at 1K, that's too much risk for an untested unit. Thanks.

You can take it to any good car stereo shop too-they usually test vintage stuff like that for free. There's a place here in town that still has a lot of old NOS service parts for stuff like that-typically parts like springs, tape heads, etc.

Re: Original GM 8 track player (complete setup)

Seems to me that you could just run 12 volts to the head unit, plug the amp and speakers up and pop in a tape to see if it plays. Or does it need to be routed through a radio head unit?

The amp provides the power so you should not need a radio to test it.

Re: Original GM 8 track player (complete setup)

So I got around to testing the unit. When I put a 8 track tape in it sounds like it is spinning but it only makes a humming noise from the speakers. It would need to be serviced.

Re: Original GM 8 track player (complete setup)

I actually got it to work! The belt drives are stretched out and would not spin the tape. I ended up cutting some of it off and used duct tape for a temporary fix. It played but the speed was not correct

The unit is now working (needs a tune up) and has been repainted. The wiring has also been reworked to original.

WOW!!!
A great ultra rare original GM optional piece, without a doubt the rarest GM accessory for 1967 -72 Chevrolet & GMC trucks.
Cosmetically restored Tape unit with Mounting Brackets, Kick Panel Speakers & Cross-over network, now bench tested so its Plug and Play.

Great piece, Great Price, Great job Brian.

Thank you for the comment. I would not have got it playing without you taking the time to help me out with the wiring!

Re: Original GM 8 track player (complete setup)

Hello, Not interested in buying the unit, but since it was cross posted in another thread, I have a question.

Wouldn't this unit be available at any GM dealer and installed in any GM vehicle? The reason I ask is there's a perception in these threads that this was a "67-72 truck only unit" or that it is the "ultimate rarity of all rare options".

The "GM" door ones are truck line only that I am aware of. If they were put in cars, the door typically had a bowtie, Oldsmobile, even blank......the GM version I believe were made for the trucks, since they never made GMC ones. Trevor

Re: Original GM 8 track player (complete setup)

That would follow with the way the radios were marked. The cars got the brand on the dial or buttons and the the trucks said GM. At least until 69 or 70 I believe.
The same basic unit was offered for Pontiac's without any branding. 68-72 Grand Prixs were mounted on the drive line hump behind the front seats inside a vinyl box that matched the upholstery. Not very convenient. I had one I pulled out of a firebird in a wrecking yard for at least 15 years. I couldn't give it away. No one believed it was a factory unit or even wanted one. Finally traded it off with a bunch of other stuff as I was tired of storing it and packing it to and from swap meets. And now days they go for $1000 plus.
The brackets with the one in the thread are also different than the bracket that was on mine. Not that they look particularly special. Not meaning to dis them if they are factory correct.
