Coats of clear coat over patina???????

I have seen quite a few of our vintage pickups with lots of patina that have been sprayed with clear coats then polished. I am aware of the patina addatives such as sweet patina and poppy's, but I am wondering about the process of spraying clear over the existing paint and or surface rust? doable? good idea? bad idea?

I would do a cleanser and green or red scrub pad to clean the surface, then your choice of clear.

I'm not a fan of clear over patina. Light cleaning with water and then evenly coat it with Penetrol. It will last indefinitely if parked inside and 3-4 months if outside. Not a Chevy, but a truck of mine with Penetrol.

I didn’t have surface rust on my 68 all I did though was sand with 2000 paper and buffed it out . Them polish and lots of wax people don’t believe it’s not cleared .

Though I like the idea of some protection and somewhat "locking in" the patina, most of the time the clear coat makes it look fake. It darkens the red of the rust and appears to shiny in some cases. For me, it should still look flat.
