Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

Wondering if anyone sells a quality fuel gauge that works. The last two that I bought did not. My truck is apart waiting on a gauge.

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

In the tank sensor? Or the dash mounted gauge?
I am assuming you mean the tank mounted sensor as it is the one that typically goes bad.
I can't answer your "were do you get a good one" question but you can check the sensor before installing it with an Ohm meter.
I believe it's 0 to 90 Ohms.

The lack of quality control is troubling. Only price seems to matter.
Cheers

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

Most of the tank sending units fail because of the brass float. Replace it with a plastic one and you should be set for the rest of the truck's life.

Got mine a year or so ago from LMC. Checked it with an Ohm meter before install and works perfectly so far.

I was thinking it was going to be a typical GM gas gauge issue... you know, the one where it takes forever to get to halfway then falls off a cliff to empty

Just bought one from them, and it didn't ohm right, and doesn't read with a sender that does ohm right. I put a new gauge and sender in a few years ago when I redid the truck. It has read from way past full, to 1/4 tank. Thats as low as it would go. So I ordered new senders and a new gauge, gauge no work, so truck will set for another week and a half while I order another. I was just hoping someone knew of a high quality gauge that I could buy. I suppose everyone is selling the same gauge, made by the same company.

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

The way past full to quarter tank issues sound like a grounding issue, possibly at the tank sending unit.

After you have ruled out the sending unit and the wiring, and know for sure the gauge is the culprit, I'd be on the lookout for a NOS 6457888 gauge or a tested used original. The quality is there on them..

I bought one for my truck a few months ago from NPD that did not work, checked it with ohm's meter and it was way off. It would read 1/4 more than what I had in the tank. I had this truck all torn apart determined to make my gauge work. I had put a new suburban tank in the rear, started there, removed some of the new wood floor to get to it. The float was full of gas(truck has been driven yet) installed new plastic float from a jeep, made sure tank was grounded good and sending unit was good. After finally sure gauge was not right, had a used one that checked out good with ohm's meter, installed it and now works great. I did call NPD and sent it back and they refunded my money, maybe they have been having a problem with them.

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

I do have a couple of tested good originals if you decide to go that route.

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Thanks to 1970cstblazer for the part number. I found a NOS gauge that will hopefully show up here.

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

Are you using a correct working resister and are the contact surfaces clean and making good connections at the guage lugs? I gave some attention to this a while back and guage has worked perfect since.

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

I chased a non functioning gas gauge this summer. Bought a new sender from Wes. Installed it but it did nothing. Gauge was still stuck at 3 o’clock. Tested the ground wire between the fuse box and sending unit and it was fine. Tested between the fuse box and gauge itself, fine. I ended up taking the cluster apart and manually moved the needle with my finger just to see if it made a difference. Put everything back together and now the gauge works perfectly. It was stuck the entire 15 years I have had the pickup. It had sat untouched inside a barn since the 80’s before I obtained it…

Re: Who sells a fuel gauge that works?

Just want to do a final post to put out what I found out. i bought another fuel gauge , this time from Summitt. This was a better gauge which has a stop pin to limit needle movement. It did not read the same as the gauges others have posted on this site when I checked the ohms with a multimeter. I was worried about that, but it does work. I now have a working fuel gauge that shows empty when empty.
Sender to ground 72.8 ohm
Sender to Power 154.5 ohm
power to ground 227 ohm
