I have an 1986 Chevy and my left side mirror is loose. Now it's not mounted loosely, it's loose where it swivels. So when I'm driving and get up to around 55-60 mph, the air actually moves the mirror inward towards the door.

Is there a way of tightening this up? Now if the door has to be dismantled to repair, then I will most likely get new mirrors. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can fix the problem, I have done it on both mine.

You can remove the screw at the bottom of the cover over the base of the mirror, and slide the cover up over the rod closer to the mirror head and there are 2 bolts you can access under the cover the gently tighten down on those, test the mirror head to make sure you can still move it. Then just slide the cover back down over the mounting hardware and replace the screw.

Thanks for the info. Now IF I would replace them, which I'm strongly considering, can they replaced without removing the door panel? Or is that how they are mounted?

I bought the truck already restored on the exterior, it's just some of the parts they reused such as the mirrors. And they are somewhat scratched up.

The answer is yes you can change them out without removing the door panel, all the bolts are located under the cover.
As long they are factory mounted, someone could have installed them using nuts and bolts but I would say highly unlikely.

There is an important thing to know, when you replace a Dunbo mirror. The bottom screw that goes into the doorskin, has a metal rod that the screw goes into a hole on the end of it. It is important that you get the screw back into that hole, so that it will support the mirror and NOT flex the sheetmetal on the door skin. If the rod is loose and it slides down, then you would have to take the inner door panel off and realigne the rod to the outside screw. This rod is held to the inner door metal structure by another screw to give it support.
