DRL override

Am I remembering this correctly, or did I dream this:

I recall that you can turn the Daytime Running Lights off by pressing the "dome off" button three times within three seconds (or something like that).

Anybody else ever heard of that or something simliar?

Thanks,

K

Re: DRL override

That's the first I've heard of that procedure. I thought there was a DRL relay under the dash I removed on my 97.
What vehicle are you working on Keith?

Re: DRL override

Keith, the only way I know of (and did) to turn them off was to pull the 20-amp fuse (#15) out of the instrument panel box (driver's door). I did it to allow my son, who was the principal driver of my truck, to be able to actually turn his headlights off as he passed through the gates of his duty station in CA.

When you pull the cover to access those fuses, it is labeled DRL-FOG. So, if you have fog lamps (OEM) they probably won't work, either.

The DRL relay is under the hood in the "convenience" panel.

Re: DRL override

My 99 S10 would do that but not my 98 C1500. I believe there is a fuse for the DRL in the fuse box in the side of the dash.

Re: DRL override

Pull the DRL-FOG fuse like said above.
I've done it pretty much first thing on all the trucks I've bought that were equipped with them.

Re: DRL override

Hmmm...it's a '97 Suburban.

I wonder if I'm thinking of a later model year?

At any rate, one technique would be to just barely apply the park brake, which turns the DRL off but then you have the brake/indicator light on in the dash.

I noticed it did not say anything about the dome override in the Owner's Manual.

No fog lamps, so I'll see about pulling the recommended fuse.

Thanks guys -

K

I believe the dome override deal you're referring to is the way to disable the auto headlights on '99-'02-ish trucks.

I'd much rather have the DRL indicator on my dash than the brake indicator.

This is your best and easiest option. Hardly any of the '96-'98 trucks came with fog lights, so it's a non-issue there. The DRL indicator will still light up on your dash with the fuse pulled, but the DRLs won't be on. I had my gauge cluster out to install some blue LED lighting, so I just completely removed the DRL bulb so I have no indicator anymore.

Ok - thanks -

The green DRL light will still come on, although the lights don't.

Again, 1badgmc.....my bad. Thanx for bringing that to my attention. I look at these posts and read stuff and reply w/o comprehending it very well, at times.

So, there should be no question about that green indicator light.....

Re: DRL override

I owned a 2000 Silverado and you could hit the dome light something like 3 times and it would turn the running lights off.

So that's all you gotta do it pull a fuse on my 99 Tahoe huh?

Yep. The magical fuse 15. That fuse was gone from my Suburban before I even drove it off the lot.

Re: DRL override

Well...I just recently put some Sylvania Silverstars in my 99, and it'll be my luck that having the DRL on all the time will end up wearing them out that much faster.

Supposedly the life span of the Silverstars isn't that great.

Exactly. I just don't like the idea of DRLs burning on lights that I use for other things. If they were a standalone deal like the newer trucks, I wouldn't worry about them. My CTS DRLs were the front signal lights. I see them burnt out all the time. Not on my CTS. I have HIDs on my Suburban and those DRLs would be murder on the ballasts.

I think it's the Silverstar Ultras that are the worst. I had a pair of Ultras that I ran for well over 2 years on my '00 Impala. I ran them for a while on my '94 GMC and then for a while on my Suburban before going to HIDs and they were still kicking. Most people are talking about less than a year of life out of the Ultras. I dunno. There are a lot of night driving miles on those bulbs of mine.

I thought that when I had them in my Impala. Since that time I've been used to driving with the factory HIDs in my CTS and the HIDs I've put in everything else. When I ran the Ultras for a bit in my Suburban before going to HIDs in it...man were those Ultras yellow!

haha. It sounds like I'm going to have to switch to some HIDs then.

I'm not real knowledgeable on HIDs yet, what are you running in yours?

Are they just bulbs? Or is it a full kit with fuses, etc?

Re: DRL override

rather than put the ebrake on ,i put a switch in to the ebrake contact, shorts to ground and the lights go out,up here they have to be on after a certain year.and the cluster brake light remindes me to turn it back on before someone else drives it.

In my truck I have 5000K HIDs from HIDgate on eBay with a hi-4 kit.

In my Suburban I have 4500K HIDs from DDM Tuning with a hi-4 kit and a relay harness.

Both kits are of pretty much equal quality, but I prefer the color of the 4500Ks in my Suburban.

Quote:

The HID kits use ballasts to ignite and power the bulbs just like the HIDs on luxury cars. The kits come with bulbs, ballasts and wiring harnesses.

If you want, I can give you a good crash course in HID 101. It might be good to start another thread.

So I pulled the #15 fuse yesterday afternoon. I'm not sure why I never did this before now.

Re: DRL override

Does anyone know if it's the same for my 06 Trailblazer SS? I can just turn the headlight switch off, and they go off until the next time I start the truck. However like you guys I hate seeing them on. I just wasn't sure if pulling the same fuse would affect the auto on light setup that the newer vehicles have.

I wish they were the stand alone lights like my 03 Sierra, or the signal lights at least.
