Last 87 Pickup?

Anyone know what the last 87 pickup was? Or maybe who has it now?

I can't find any info on the web (quick search)...

but you might check with the GM Heritage Center archive.

Since they have all the invoices, perhaps they would be willing to do a search and could check to see what the highest VIN was.

They might even have the actual truck but I doubt it since I don't recall seeing it there.

I contacted the Heritage Center and got this reply...

Eric,

I regret to inform you that we have no way of determining what VIN the
last 1987 Chevrolet Pickup truck had. Our vehicle documentation is not
organized in a manner that lends itself to such searching as it is filed
by invoice number not VIN. Furthermore, since Chevrolet trucks were built
at a multiple plants there is no simple way to deduce this from the VIN
number itself.

First - thanks for contacting the Heritage Center.

Secondly - I'll have to chew Christo out for his answer the next time I talk to him....

He's probably right - not straightfoward since the information is filed by invoice number. But - there is a mechanism to find it by VIN (obviously - since they find your original invoice when you send them the VIN - not the other way around). Once you are in the ballpark you could do some spot checks in the data on either side until you are comfortable you've found the highest number.

Similarly - he is correct - there is no correlation in VINs between the various assembly plants. But, knowing which plant built the latest into the model year (ie, Flint, St Louis, Oshawa, Ft Wayne or Pontiac) you could again search until you were reasonably sure you had the highest number and then double check the dates.

It's a lot of work, and probably outside his job description, which is why he is hesitant to do that. I've already sent him on a bunch of wild goose chases and personally would not ask him to do that again.

But - I'm glad you asked. He might let me do it for him but I simply do not have the time right now.

Well I just figured that was one of things they kept on a master list somewhere... I would even been happy with the last R/V... its cool.

What brought this up was a post here and had just read a post on the last 3rd Gen Camaro (other hobby) built which as you might guess is well documented.

Maybe a good rainny day project here for me...

and I know they have an R/V Suburban (a '91 I believe)



but I don't think they have an R/V pickup.

That burb was sweet, I thought about hot wiring it and driving it out, but restrained myself. Then I thought about swapping the clip for my 87's, but then I realized Keith probably wouldn't help me and the guards would get upset. Plus I already have an '88 grille set up in the shed.So I wiped the drool off my chin and went back to my cubicle.

BTW the GM Heritige Center provides vehicles for display here at Warren. Keith's photo is from the 2nd story balcony in the atrium at the VEC Tower, and the display shown is Suburbans. Sometimes it's very nice to work here.

I don't think my 87 was the last built but it's in competition for most love needed. Rear axle leak, getting air in fuel, diesel drips, rockers gone, fenders holed bumper bent, grille broken, coolant leak, bed sides rusty, door glass weatherstrippping gone, power window burnt out, radio inop, lighter missing, etc, and Rustoleum paint all over. Wouldn't trade if for anything but a GMC crew.

RE: The museum; i thought one of the MOST ANNOYING things gm had to do was to sell some of the vehicles in it's collection---as if that was going to make any difference in their financial situation. It's not been that long ago and now gm is profitable once again---- so, the museum cars were sold for nothing.

i've always voted/sided democrat but i can never forgive the obama administration for what they did to pontiac----again totally unessesary.


2) Try to view Michael Moore's doc, "Roger and Me." i think it shows the last 87 pickup to be made at Flint (or Pontiac or wherever plant it was) i think it was red and white 2 tone?

The vehicles that were sold were duplicates and others that were not especially significant. We kept the good stuff.

But - desparate times call for desparate measures. They quit cutting the grass around here during that time, which I found more annoying than letting a few vehicles go....

I can honestly say that I'm not interested in a tie. I want GM to win so big that everyone else goes home.

But back on topic, we would have to decide which model we wanted the last of, as I'm sure the crews and 'burbs and K5's were built longer in 87. So if we limit ourselves to just regular cab 1/2 or 3/4 tons then we could start looking at build dates. i didn't work trucks back then, but I would assume that they built the first 1988's in one plant and kept the 87's going until May or june in the others. Anyone got a May or June date truck?

My manufacture date is 7/87 if that means anything regarding this post..........is a 1987 Chev R-10, 1/2 Ton Custom Deluxe, 305 TBI, TH700R4, 3.08 posi (ordered I think), 60,000 miles and VIN is 1GCDR14HXS180889.
Did I win???????? LOL!!!
BTW: I LOVE this truck!!! I've had older ones customized (from 1966 to 1972), but this one seems more solid built and rides more like a vehicle I'd spend a few hundred miles driving!!

Teaser... Last 87 GMC? At least it was the last 87 GMC at the St Louis plant. A 8/7/87 build date will be hard to beat. This truck was the 2nd to last truck off of the line. The last one was a Chevy. Details to follow later. I have hidden the last didgits of the vin because I am still researching the location of the last truck, the Chevy.

I did get the meet the maintance guy (and first owner) who watched it come down the line...

Disclaimer! Loading vehicles backwards on a trailer is not recommended. However given the location (the fact it was nosed in a garage, with a short driveway, a busy street) and other factors, this one was. I really should have off loaded this in a parking lot and loaded it correctly! It was tired down using a DOT approved 4-point method.
