Re: high school trucks

Man, I wish I had some pics.

shortly after high school my wife worked at a local gas station in the small town where we graduated. I had a '66 short stepside, she had a '65 long fleet, one of my buddies had a '65 long fleet, and he dad had the '66 that we have now. On any given evening all 4 of our trucks were lined up in the gas station parking lot. That would have been a very cool pic.
Sometime later the wife wrecked her '65 long fleet and bent the frame, I had already pulled the engine and trans out of my '66 to put into a '73 long fleet truck so we used my frame, bed, and 5 lug suspension and put her dang near perfect cab, front sheet metal, straight 6, and granny 4 speed in it. we loved that truck, but it was pour only vehicle when we had our first son so we ended up trading it for something with a back seat for ease of using a car seat for the new kiddo. We both miss that truck bad.

It had late '80 newer style rallys on it.
Here is a pic (only one I can find , I scanned it in from a regular photo) of our hybrid truck.

Re: high school trucks

This was my high school vehicle. My dad gave it to me when i was 14. I still got it. I'm in the process of rebuilding it. Check out my 59 thread. Haven't worked on it in about a year, but it's still in the garage waiting on it's turn. A 60 chevy got me a little sidetracked. It's been parked for about 20 years. i got big plans for it. And the first big steps done. Just have to get off my butt and work on it. Heres a pic from the 80's, and how it sits now.

Re: high school trucks

Great topic! I found mine in about 1993 sitting behind an office in downtown Sonoma CA. My Dad had a 64 (that I now have) and when I saw the 61 short step I had to have it. Talked to the owner and $500 later it was mine.

I put a 350/350 combo in it, dropped it a little, made it all one color (primer grey) and drove the hell out of it until I left for the Air Force.

Here's what it looked like then:

And what it looks like if I put it back together now

Someday I'll bring her back to life...

Re: high school trucks

Here's mine, got it when I was around 14. Then I got sidetracked with my '69, fixed that up, and drove that through high school. Now I'm a freshman in college and I work on the '64 on the weekends when I can afford parts. Motor is a 250ci I got off craigslist, front suspension has 1.5" stepped LCAs, and 3" drop springs. Rear suspension will be manual-fill air bags, I'm working on the c-notch at the moment. After the holidays I'll buy a wiring harness for it and get that sorted out.

Maybe I'll get to drive it before I graduate college.

Re: high school trucks

Here's some of my older son's trucks from high school back in the 80's. The one on the left is a cousin and the other two are my boys. I think the blue truck had a big block & 4 speed.

The 54 Ford wagon was also his. We bought it from the original owner. Other than some door damage it was as new with around 20k on the clock.

Re: high school trucks

The 68 was my first. My Dad gave it to me at 15 since he had a company truck and didn't drive it anymore. CST 350 3spd. Ignore the TP it was the only pic I have.

The green 65 panel I bought between my junior and senior year from one of my teachers. It was in really nice shape. I kick myself for selling it I gave it away for $300.00 because I didn't have the money to put brakes and exhaust on it

The primer 65 I bought just after graduation. Eventually it ended up being my only ride and was my daily for several years. I still have this one. It has been in storage since 99.

Both panels were 6cyl 3spd.

I think I have a one somewhere before the aluminum grille got banged up. If I can find it I'll get it posted.

This is the only other remaining photo of the truck. I believe my son developed and printed it in high school photo class about 20 years ago which is why it’s in black and white.

URL=http://img19.imageshack.us/i/trevstruckbw02.jpg/][/URL]

His mom and I were going through a divorce at the time, so I missed out on helping much when he owned these. It turns out the blue truck started out with a 283. It was pulled and installed in his brothers 65 El Camino. The 62 got a 350 with a completely new T10 four speed that had been removed from a 32 Ford roadster. The case was shiny black with button head stainless fasteners and chrome shifter brackets. It got a Lakewood scattershield, and MSD ignition. The engine was painted Chevy orange with black headers, and the engine compartment was painted dark gray Zolatone. The valve covers were one of a kind. A friend of a friend worked at Cal Custom, and produced two sets of “custom” valve covers – one set for a big block and one set for a small black. They were regular Cal Custom finned aluminum covers, but with a Chevy bowtie cast into the center, similar to the early Edelbrock signature valve covers. The friend kept the BBC covers, and my son got the SBC pair. They were the only ones he’s ever seen, and unfortunately he never took any photos of the engine.

The grille in the 62 was damaged when he bought the truck, and was replaced with the Pick-Your-Part 66 version shown. Close examination reveals it also had a chrome cowl vent. He hated the van wheels, but on a teenager budget he couldn’t afford to replace them. Before either of these photos were taken, his brother had damaged the transmission, and since he needed the truck to start a new job, the 4 speed was pulled and an automatic installed, including the cooler which shows in the color photo.

The black truck was a big window 66 with a completely built 396. It had a 427 cam, Rhodes lifters, balanced, etc and wore early Mickey Thompson valve covers.. This truck received a beautiful original aluminum grille that was later destroyed in a collision. It ran Ansen slot mags which looked better than the chrome steel ones. By the time it was painted flat black a replacement steel grille had been installed.

Re: high school trucks

there are major perks to being an only child Dad (62gmc910) horse traded for this truck ,I was going to build the 65 chev but its pretty rough, Mom suggested the one ton. It's a really low miler, under 40000 and all original
the winch deck is off of a '72 GMC that dad owned "back in the day", but the deck was on a '64 gmc before that, The plan is to use it carefully as a yard truck / car show trailer queen so it doesn't get miled up or have some idiot run into it.I'm in highschool now and am home schooled so hopefully I will have more time to work on these sweet old trucks

Re: high school trucks

Every time i see this thread I wish I had a picture of my dad's '72 C-20, learned to drive in it and do a few other firsts too.

I remember when he bought it. Hugger orange with a white cab and black accent trim. Sharp truck. On the drive home the hood shook so bad we thought it was going to fall off... flat spotted 8 ply tires.... after a few miles everything smoothed out.

We had a sawmill and this was our logging truck. Had a potent 350, 4-speed with granny gear and a really high ratio rear. Pulled like a mule and got about 9 miles to the gallon.

About the time I got my license I talked dad into putting a JC Whitney set of glass pack duals on it. Man it was loud and with the 4-speed sounded fan-freakin-tastic.

I recall a few days later I was coming home from high school, in the truck, and was about a mile from our house. I ran it through the gears, running it out pretty good between shifts. When I pulled in the driveway there was the old man with a big grin on his face. His only comment: "Havin fun? I heard you coming".

We didn't agree on much back then, or now, but that was a special memory, burned into my brain.

I searched the web and this is about as close as I could find to the old logging truck (except this one is lowered with mags).

Re: high school trucks

Here is my truck that I got when I was 14. It was 1980 or so.

I put all the money I could on making it something I was proud to drive.

It would be cool if I still had it, but to be honest, the 66 I'm building now is a more solid truck. It also helps that I have money to spend on toys now.

I have the Truck, Bike and Boat Trader that I first saw my '63 in.

Here it is;

I got it for a lot less than the $2200 asking price.

Re: high school trucks

Here is my 62, I don't have any pics on the computer but I have had it since way before HS he passed away in 1990 and I had it 2 years before, my grandfather bought it new in 1962, custom ordered with a corvette 283 with steel crank and fuelie heads, now a TPI /700R combo, nothing on this truck has not been changed, undergoing a rebuild right now to fix lots of "CA Body Rot"
