"thumper cam"
Well it was news to ME.
I've never heard of this type of Camshaft. Supposedly theres a Stage 1, 2 & 3 Cam. Supposed to retard the timing during idle (up to 1K RPM) to give you a radicle, Rumpity Bumpity Idle, then after 1K RPM's, it goes back to the stock timing. I had never heard of this type of Cam before. Sounds like no more, do you have to "Pump Up" your engine to accept a loping Cam. I heard they were expensive though. I was told $500.00-$600.00??? Anyone else heard of/or had experience with one? I'd love to Hear/See a You Tube Video of one in action!

Re: "thumper cam"
I have a big mutha thumpr in my 5.3. It sounds great but it doesn't make the most power and I doubt it will like the turbo very much.

Re: "thumper cam"
They are just designed to make noise. There are way better choices if you actually want to make power and not just a bunch of noise

Re: "thumper cam"
^^^^^^
Agreed. They just tend to have a narrow lobe separation angle causing a rough idle. They do sound good though. |

Re: "thumper cam"
Thay sound good but if you build your motor right you will match everything and even a small cam sounds big. But a motor with matching stuff will perform better then a cam like these. If you want the sound only great but you want something to back it up get a topend kit.

Re: "thumper cam"
thumper cams are good for posers who would otherwise soil thier underware if faced with driving a true performance engine

Re: "thumper cam"
A CompCams Thumpr cam is just a cam that has more overlap ground in than would be typical at a given performance level. So it's a streetable cam that sounds like a "race" cam with a rumpty idle.
You give up some level of power, low-and mid-range driveability and fuel economy for a rumpty idle. If you *have* to have the sound, it's a way better way to get it than to actually run a "too big" cam. I "did the math" on the post below to show why Thumprs do what they do... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...9&postcount=18 Last edited by Ticker; 02-26-2011 at 10:10 AM. |

It was strickly the "sound effect" you get at idle. If my engine wasnt so tired, I'd consider putting in one of these.

Re: "thumper cam"
All engine designs are the result of the goals of the owner, and are always a compromise to some extent. There's nothing wrong with a Thumpr any more than there is with dual quads on an engine that will never see more than 5,000 RPM. I personally like the sound of a well-tuned engine that can deliver what it promises, but I can understand the desire for a race idle for fun and enjoyment.

Re: "thumper cam"
I just built a 350 bored .030 over with flat-top pistons and a thumpr cam. I've got 72cc Summit Racing cast heads on it with a stock cast intake and a Quadrajunk. It'll more than back up the lopey idle. It runs like a raped ape and will smoke the snot out of the tires from a standstill. Of course I'm running a 3-speed with 3.08 gears and not a power robbing automatic. (If you haven't noticed, I HATE automatics. More stuff to go wrong and they take all the fun outta driving). The only problem is tuning it for peak performance. Initial timing at 12* BTDC works well for me with an orange spring under the power piston. Still having problems when the secondaries kick in though. Runs great for 3 seconds then falls flat on it's face. I'm to the point to where I'm just going to chunk the Qjet and bolt on a Holley. My neighbor has one just sitting in his barn, so I figure why not. You can't beat free. Just thought I'd voice my opinion since everyone is entitled to their own. Take it for what it's worth. Like someone once said, you don't know until you try.

if you had any of these 3 Cams installed , and lets say you got stuck in Stop-n-Go Traffic, would your engine "Load-up" like it would with a "Built" engine? Also lets say you were doing 80 mph and let your foot off the gas and came to a fast/controlled stop, would the engine "Die" on you, being that the idle is so radicle?
