17057229 quadrajet choke question
On a 1977 400 sbc. I have a 17057229 quadrajet carb.
My question is does the divorced choke have to have the tin cover on it or can I run it without one? I currently do not have the choke thermostat or linkage for it, but I have them coming. This is what th P. O. Did and the choke does not work at all crept wide open lol. Also can anyone tell me where the vacuum line goes that’s connected to the steel line running to my tranny? |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
Yes you need the cover. It keeps the heat in the coil so it works properly.
The hose to your tranny hooks to a manifold vacuum port on your carb or intake. I see the end of the metal line beside your distributor. It should be hooked to a vacuum tree right there. Did you know you can buy an electric choke conversion. If the heat crossover in your intake is plugged (many are) your new coil might not work. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
Thanks geezer. The vacuum hose was 1 of 2 that were plugged off with a long screw when I bought it.
I don’t think the jet crossover was plugged but I’ll look next time I get to the shop. It was only 13 degrees out today. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
you can’t see if the crossover is plugged unless you pull off the intake.
You can feel for heat though. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
Yea I was think of the plate that covers where the choke thermostat is supposed to be.
As far as I know he has never taken the motor apart because he asked if I ever got the rear of the manifold to stop leaking oil and asked what I did to fix it. I have not drove it enuff to verify a leak tho. Thanks for the responses. |

Plate!
What plate? You might not have a divorced choke intake. Take a pic of it. |

I’ll get one tomorrow. It’s late and I’m not at the shop.

From the picture it looks like your choke is wired open. I don’t have the tin cover on mine and it seems to work OK

If we are talking about the same thing, The line should go the a vacuum cannister on the AC box, and from there inside to the AC controls. The other line coming out where the choke is is supposed to go to the Air Cleaner valve

Im gonna see if I cant find the tin choke thermostat cover in the junkyard this week. most of the old square bodies around here that are left have all had the engines removed for circle track racing tho. |

Before you go junkyarding take a pic of where you said this plate was.
Possible the cover won’t work. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
When did EGR come in? That is the only thing I can think would have a cover plate in that area. Maybe a PO did a carb swap, used the wrong carb and couldn't make the choke work due to mis-match with manifold.

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
this is what I called the plate, but its just where the choke thermostat mounts to the intake manifold at. My 350 with a holly intake has the plate over it, which is in my 1980 Malibu.
I also got the vacuum line hooked up to the A/C canister, while I was up there taking the photos. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
I already did purchase the parts. junkyard also had the cover for it so hopefully I saved the 16 bucks that a new one costs. the junkyard is right across the street from where I work so its on the way.
Wife doesn't like it but those things will happen lol. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
I would check to make sure your 'choke pull off' is operating properly...and not leaking.
It is easy to test simply push it all the way in and put your finger over the hose....it should hold position and stay in. That might be why your choke is wired all the way open....due to the fact that your choke pull off might not be doing its job. Do you have another pic of what that temporary choke wire is connected to? ....is it on the end of a small hollow tube protruding straight out from the side of the carb and out through the linkage.....and does that tube have either a vacuum hose on it or a end plug? It needs one or the other. Coley

I purchased a new choke pull off, just to be safe. I currently don't have any photos but I was missing the smaller choke pull off linkage, also got that from the junkyard. I have it all put together but its been in the single digits until bout 2pm and I haven't had time to go up and take any photos or test it out yet. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
Finally got back to work on the truck, turns out they plugged off the intake gasket to heat up my divorced choke. So I opted for an electronic conversion choke. Set up was easy and quick, uses the same intake manifold mounting spot and a sensor bolted down with 1 intake manifold bolt. Took the power from the windshield wiper motor with key power only.
Thanks for the tips and info everyone. |

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
After reading this thread and the other thread you have on Gear ratios, was the vacuum line to the modulator disconnected causing the transmission not to shift properly, causing your "high reving at 50 MPH"

Re: 17057229 quadrajet choke question
No it’s still hooked up. They put the block off plate in the gasket when they were looking for a rear manifold oil leak. I currently have no vacuum lines plugged or unhooked per a diagram I found online.
