Brake setup issue
Hi all, a friend of mine is sorting out his 49 & has come across a problem. He's messaged me & ive said I'll visit him this afternoon. He said that he's fitted a Heidts front end & 2" dropped spindles but when he tried to fit the discs they are hitting the caliper bracket & steering arm. I suggested he may have the wrong rotors, they are 11" & Chevy lug pattern. I know I had a few problems & learnt a lot from you guys so hopefully we can sort this too, thanks

Re: Brake setup issue
These are the rotors that he has, the M2 bearings fit but the dust seal is a little loose. He's been told that they're not Heidts as they don't sell vented & grooved. The inside of the rotor just touches the caliper bracket. Can anyone give me any info about these rotors from this? Thanks

Re: Brake setup issue
That looks like something that came from RodPartsDealer or GearHead Enterprises. If it is I don't think its a heidt's MII kit it just looks like one or they have added those rotors. He needs to go back to the seller and see what's up.

Re: Brake setup issue
On the seal, he should be able to source a proper seal locally by measuring and fitting the seal to the hub and spindle.
I've got a set of the same caliper brackets and don't think there is a left and right but he might compare them and see if they are made to only go on one side for a good fit. Did he buy all the parts from the same source or did he mix and match parts?

Re: Brake setup issue
He didn't get all the parts he ordered so had to go to a good supplier to get the rest. So unfortunately it is a bit of a mismatch

Re: Brake setup issue
Where does the rotor hit the steering arm and the caliper bracket? A bit of grinder smoothing on the bracket and arm may give enough clearance and or a slight modification to the inner lip of the rotor on a lathe might help if it is making contact.

Re: Brake setup issue
That was something we discussed, he's done a bit of grinding since I've left him. It seems he may have to live with it. On a separate note is there anywhere he can buy motor mounts to fit an sbc350?

Re: Brake setup issue
You can buy motor mounts just about anywhere.
Here are a few starter sites. speedwaymotors.com https://www.summitracing.com/ DYI starter http://welderseries.com/blog/#!/Chev...=0&sort=normal Cheers! |

Re: Brake setup issue
Those rotors look like GM G body rotors.
I would start with Speedway motors.com. They have 5 or 6 catalogs, early iron, classic, truck, racing, etc. I would go to the racing catalog, and look for a 1/8" spacer to push the rotor out if the spindles are long enough. Then I would see if the 78-87 seals fit those rotors. If those spindles are a brand, call the manufacturer's hot line, and tell them what you are facing. They could tell you what the spindle -rotor matchup would be. All of those designers look for parts thatyou can buy locally at a parts house, and design the spindles, tie rods, etc. to facilitate them making kits as cheaply as possible while maintaining strength.

Re: Brake setup issue
What design of Motor mounts does he want to use Yoshi?
Do to your being in the UK (yes folks YOshi lives in the United Kingdoom and shipping costs a big chunk) Fabricating some mounts and locally available rubber biscuits (think Hockey puck with a hole in the middle) and get out with the cost of the metal and rubber pieces. If you study this a bit you see that it has a triangular shaped plate that bolts to the side of the block and a leg that comes out from that that sets on a pad fastened to the inside of the frame rail. This would not be real hard to make and the cost would be real low. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Transdapt-47...hVV6SR&vxp=mtr Another option would be a tube crossmember that uses factory style 68/64 Chevy motor mounts. Those are real simple to use and not too expensive.

Re: Brake setup issue
Thanks coupeguy, we'll look into that. Mr48chev I don't think it matters what style of mounts he uses as long as they work. He said to me " every time I ask someone about motor mounts they reply make some but I don't know where to start!" He can weld & do some fab work

Re: Brake setup issue
We will have to find him some drawings of how to do them then.
This is the tube style that is popular and very easy to install. http://www.jegs.com/i/Trans-Dapt/969/4840/10002/-1 Probably the simplest setup to put a V8 in an early pickup. I've used several of them over the years. Front and rear crossmember and mounts here for a fair price https://www.performanceonline.com/19...mber-Kit-with-

Re: Brake setup issue
is he looking for motor mounts alone or mounts and a crossmember?
if the whole shebang, and he can cut and weld, and he wants to fab them himself, just grab a pair of standard mounts for a camaro or whatever, get the engine where he wants it, bolt on the mounts to the engine and fab a crossmember. easy peezy. make sure the exhaust is in place along with steering so he has clearances for that stuff.it would also be nice if the crossmember bolted in. you can box the frame up there for extra support if he wants.send a pic so we can see what he is working with. |

Re: Brake setup issue
Ok thanks, I've spoken to him via text & he says he's got some mounts now but not sure if the other part welds to the mustang cross member!

Re: Brake setup issue
typical sbc motor mount looks like this one and uses a long 3/8'' bolt to attach to just about anything
these are mine in truck: just some 3/8'' tube and 1.25'' square tubing my fatman mustII x-member is pretty heavy wall if you have a lighter x-member you can use 10 ga plate and come off the frame another with square tubing coming off the frame
