Hopping up a Chevy 250 6 cyl.
Has anyone done this? What kind of cam did you use? What type head work? Intake & carbeuration? Headers?
Fixing to pull mine out & want to know what direction to go in.... Thanks in advance!!! Bryan

......speak of the devil, I am painting a guys van righ now that has a built 250 I6 in it, headers, dual exhaust, cam, head P&P, intake 4Barrel carb...lots of goodies, I know he has a lot of Clifford stuff on it I'll get in touch w/ him....let me know what your wondering, and I'll ask him.

try inliners international and langstons stovebolt.i've been looking at these and the clifford site,lots of info and parts.crane and comp cams offer several different cams for these motors also.i'm going to build my 250 c.i. up a little after i get the truck painted.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I've been all over the Clifford site, even called them & talked to a guy named Larry. He says they have a .264 cam with .518 duration that should make the 250 bad a$$!!!
I was just wondering if anyone on the board had any personal experiences, advice, warnings,etc. before I get neck deep into this thing......

Your going to get a lot of "throw it out and get a 350" comments. If I had the money for a inline I would do it but I have a 283 that runs so I'm stuck with it. look around at www.inliners.org and they have a lot of good advice. Also. there is a book by Leo Sanducci on inline 6 perforrmance at amazon.

GO 250 GO!!!! I say DO IT!!!! Different is original, and original is cool.....besides a built I6 sounds just as cool as a built V8 trust me I know I have one in my garage....And besides how cool is it going to be to say to guys that ask what you have and you say....aw nothing just an old I6.

There was a killer article in the June July or August edition of Hot Rod that talks about making a 600-800+ HP Inline 6. They talk about everything - fuel injection, headers, how to do the lump port modification on the head, tons of stuff.
The cover has a red and black mustang on it. I think I have two copies at the house. If you can't find a copy amongst friends, I can probably scan the article off and either email it to you or post it on the web for a day or two so you can download it. The key to it is money. Getting your heads reworked will cost you between $500-1500 using the methods they describe. They did a lot of stuff with Kirby-Sissell ( www.sissellsautomotive.com ), they have a lot of inline supplies (link: http://www.sissellsautomotive.com/6cylprod.html ) There were a lot of good links in the article.

One last word of advice: If you go with a remanufactured or aftermarket head (which is recommended) from a place like Sissells auto, I don't think stock headers will fit.
Be careful when ordering headers if you have a 250 and not the 292. If you can trade up w/someone for a 292, do it...it's worth it. This is the kind of clearance I got with my Dynomax dual exhaust headers on my 250 - I had to ballpeen the hell out of them to get them to fit under the stock intake (this is "normal" I found out): http://satellitehead.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=8 Pay special attention to the second page: http://satellitehead.com/gallery/thu...album=8&page=2 If you are planning on lowering your truck, try to find shorties instead of full length headers or you'll be disappointed like me with headers that hang waaaay low under the truck. I sold mine after two uses to someone for half of what I paid for em and even gave them someEastwood header paint to sweeten the deal. All of your inline parts are gonna be like that - you will be lucky to get more than half of the money out of it that you put into it. It's really important to decide ahead of time ... is it really worth it to me to spend $3,000 to soup up my inline, get 10MPG, haul ass on the quarter mile but get smoked by a V8 any other time...when I could go big and fuel injected? I ended up putting about $1,000 into inline stuff and literally just sold it all a few days ago for $325 to another board member a up in NC after advertising it all over the web for almost 5+ months at inliners.org classifieds, craigslist, here at the forum and a couple other places. I finished my engine and drivetrain all up, got it up and running...everything but the exhaust pipes...then I realized how crappy my gs mileage was, how I was still stuck with a 3spd on the tree, and how much happer I would have been spending twice that to get into a nice fuel injected V8. Hence my LS1 swap photo gallery in my signature. I'm mid-swap and have been for a little while. I went overboard with a big engine, so I paid more, but ... whatever. When I'm done, I'll have at least 320 torque & HP, get 22-28MPG highway and I can hang with all the other 'maros and 'birds and even some of the 'vettes out there...and I plan on smokin every 'stang I get a chance to

Shifty's dead on about getting a 292. The extra 42 inches make a huge difference. There's a book by Leo Santucci on building this engine, it's available at the major book sites. Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual. Cost is about $20. Leo made this a great book for someone with a moderate amount of experience. Give you a lot of dos and don'ts.
Hopping up these engines can get expensive in a hurry. The 292 will help by giving you a lot more power to start with. I would start with porting the head myself. Headers, and an intake for either dual carbs or a 450 cfm 4 bbl. Another place for parts is www.stoveboltengineco.com .

I saw a really cool triple-deuce setup that I think Offy makes - three two bbl carbs in a row. This is supposedlyl especially useful because the stock carb placement causes cylinders 3 and 4 to run rich while 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 end up running lean - mostlyl because the carb sits right over cylinders 3 and 4.
All this info and more is in that issue of hot rod mag. There are a lot of books out there on the topic. I was wanting to buy this one but never got to check it out at the store ( http://www.themotorbookstore.com/chevy6cyl.html ) This thread was the last bit on souping up inliners that I participated in: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=164217 There may be a lot of good information and thoughts in there for you - me and some of the guys had some good back and forth which would possibly shed some light no things for you. I really suggest giving it a read. I really think inlines are novel. Cool toys to play with. If I had a 4x4 off-roader, I'd probably drop my stock inline into it (factory engine from my '68). I don't though ...

I'm happy with my 292. It has a Clifford water heated manifold,390CFM holley 4 barrel, JetHot coated Hedman headers and stainless exhaust. I just TTTed a nice start for your project on the parts board. Chris

Not a 250 in my '68 Stepside, but a 292 -- however the principles are the same. I bored the original block .030 over, added a Crane 260H cam, Offy 4 Bbl intake, Edelbrock 500 CFM carb, Clifford headers, Centerforce II clutch, "H" pipe, dual exhaust, SM465, 12-bolt 3.73 w/ Eaton posi, 235/85/R16LT Dunlops. I'm pretty happy with the results.

One question though, The guy I talked to at Clifford Performance recommended that I go with the 250 vs. the 292 because the 250 has a shorter stroke & thus able to rev higher. Right now, I have the 250; finding a 292 might be a little more difficult than it sounds. So, all that being said, should I stick with the 250, or try & find the 292?

If you have a 250, go with a 250. I don't think your going for massive HP anyway so what the heck. 220 hp is more than enough figuring the 350 that came in the truck originally had 170hp. If you look cool and sound good, it doesn't matter how fast you go.

One thing that I should have stated in my original post is that this motor/truck will be for my 16 yr old son to drive back & forth to school. I had a 67 SWB stepside when I was in school as well; except mine had a 455 big block in it. The truck met it's demise quite violently after leaving the road at approx. 130+ mph.........I am quite lucky to be able to be a part of this discussion, not to mention to be alive.....
That being said, I don't want my son to have the same oppurtunity that I had, yet at the same time I would like for the truck to be something that will turn heads in the school parking lot. I personally think that it is some sort of 'rite of passage' to have at least one vehicle in high school that is "cool". OK, enough about me....After reading all the posts on this thread, I'm pretty sure we'll go with the 250. One question: I see most everyone paints their motors Chevy orange. Is this the correct color for a '67 250? Thanks again for all of y'all's comments!!!! Bryan
