Great deal on new crate engine

Just thought I'd pass this along.

When I was looking at possibly buying a new motor for my truck I was a little disappointed, but not surprised, that they had gone up $3-400 in price... since I last looked in 2008. So I saved Jegs listing on ebay, and just happened to look last night, and it was $1,207.99 with free shipping. That's the lowest price they've had in a long time (if you look at the sold history, they do routinely lower the price) and the best price I've seen from other sellers. Free shipping too.

So now I've got the new motivation for the C10.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

if you are going to install a crate engine , why use a low HP stock engine??
I do understand people have budget issues , different drivablity concerns
but for 3K you get a good 400Hp performing engine , from year one and others

Why pay 3K+ for someone else to build YOUR engine?

If all you want is a driver, a stock crate is just fine, and FAR more reliable. If you want high HP, shell out the extra bucks for less reliability, and less usability, and wait while someone else builds it. Or, you could just build the thing yourself, in which case, you would probably want to start off with a stock crate engine.

...yeah, why hire qualified local people and put money into the local economy to get a motor that specifically suits you when you can buy a generic motor made super cheap in mexico for very little money....LOL

no kidding right, I'm pretty sure I bought a complete master kit for my 305 from northwest auto for under $200 and I believe we paid 300-400 for the machine shop work on the block so around 500-600 for a rebuilt motor that's now 15 years old and still as strong as any mildly built 305 can be.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

I don't understand why everyone thinks you have to have a high HP truck?

My truck scoots right along with it's current worn out 350. It moved along just fine when it was a 250 straight 6 too. I don't want or need a High HP motor.

3K is ANOTHER $1,800 dollars. THEN with that kind of HP my 700R will burn up and I'll have to spend ANOTHER 3K to buy one that can handle that kind of power.

I got what I wanted Unless you're offering to pay the extra $4,800 I'll need to have 150 more HP?

Plus, you can add HP enhancers as you go / afford it. ie, ignition, intake manifold, head work, exhaust system and cam. That is what I did with my stock 350, runs like a hot-rod should!

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

I'm not crazy about horsepower either. It's a truck, not a musclecar.

Now if I change out my 4.11 rear end for a 3.73 then maybe I'll need more power to run these WV hills but until then, the 250 I6 stays.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

I think "hot rodding" has always inferred a high horsepower engine. Im an old school hot rodder-------But, I also live in 2013 with $3.00 a gal. gas. If (IF), Im just going to do a little street cruising and some showing--Why would I need high horsepower? In one of our trucks (unless you load the rear end heavily), you cant get traction with a stock motor let alone 400-500 hp.
Just saying----why????

It's your truck. Build it the way you want it to be and don't let anyone "should" all over you!

Great engine for a really great price. Best part about these GM crates is they make the power in a lower RPM range. My DD rarely gets above 3,000 RPMs, just about the time most performance motors start building power.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

The truck has HEI now with an edelbrock 1406 4 barrel, and I have a brand new edelbrock performer intake I've been wanting to install forever on it, and it has a true dual exhaust system on it

Wow, that is a great price. Heck, had I seen that before I rebuilt the I-6 250 in my wagon, I would have likely done a V8 swap.

Great find!!!

Anybody?

I was trying to go another route but at this price, I could do a cam swap, good intake and carb or some efi Tbi setup, and let it eat.

The heads really hold the HP back, they're not high flowing... they're set up for velocity not volume so it makes torque down low. Any big cam will make all that go to waste. A smaller cam with decent lift and a good bit of overlap would be best if you felt like you needed to do it. That would void the warranty and probably only net a very minimal seat of the pants improvement.

If you wanted to drop a little coin some small chamber heads, improved intake, and then a cam/valvetrain upgrade would result in a nice combo and the short block should be solid but for that kind of money it may be better to find a 350 core and build an entire engine that is all matched up pistons/heads/valvetrain etc.
