How long can you store a trans?
I'm looking at downsizing my parts collection and building a truck my way. One of those steps is rebuilding some of my auto trans'. But I know it will be a while before I use them. How long can one sit on the shelf before all the internal seals need to be replaces due to taking a set? Is there some trick Like using transgel on the seal lips) to extend this time? Shaft Teflon seals? Talking 700R4 and particularly my 2004R's.

Re: How long can you store a trans?
I'm sort of interested in this post also. I have a TH350 that has been sitting unused for about 5 years.
I will say that this same transmission was in a 75 impala for about 2 or 3 years without being used and ran perfect when I installed it in my 69 Chevy truck. Also, my next door neighbor installed a salvage yard transmission in his Dodge truck that sat in the yard for several years and ran great. My guess is it depends on the condition of the transmission before storage and how well it's sealed so moisture doesn't get inside.

Re: How long can you store a trans?
External seals? Some O-rings (dip stick tube and kickdown/TV cable) and a front and rear shaft seal? Just replace the seals and O-rings when you're ready to huck it back in a rig.
