Rear end question
my 68 coil spring rear is the early one 55 1/2 inches, however the PO put 5 lug axles from a 78 chevy in it. I'm getting ready to install rear disc brakes but the axles are sticking out of the shaft about 1 1/2 inches on each side.
the rear says HA and the ratio is 14:43 (what are these ?) do I change axles or rear end housing to a 71-72 ? thanks, Larry |

Re: Rear end question
43 divided by 14 = 3.08 gear ratio
other than that i got nothing as i like them but have not played with them before .

Re: Rear end question
All truck 12 bolts '63-'70 are 62" wide WMS to WMS. All truck 12 bolts '71-'82 are 63.5" wide WMS to WMS. It amazes me how many people thing they can just slide the '71-'82 axles into a '63-'70 housing and it will be OK. There are 5 lug conversion axles available for the '63-'70 housing. Which way to go depends on the condition of the rest of your differential and whether or not you have room for a wider differential.

Re: Rear end question
Is everything else in the differential is in good condition, then yes. You need a set of aftermarket 5 lug conversion axles for the '63-'70 truck 12 bolt.

Re: Rear end question
Way back in the day I did the same. (later 5 lug axles in my early housing).
I just made spacers out of steel and grade 8 bolts to hold the backing plates on. It worked!

Re: Rear end question
I used shorter Moser 5 lug conversion axles in the 1969 12-bolt housing in my truck. They fit perfect.
