Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

I want tow hooks for the front and rear of my 72 just for that freak occassion when it needs to be put on a tilt bed. Worry insurance I guess.

I have read alot of threads here about the rare 72 hooks and the even more rare rear hook adders, but I'm not into paying for rare...I just want functional that won't cause damaged bumpers from chains/cables.

Anybody have that lead?

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

Hers a thread I made about installing 88-98 pickups tow hooks. The chain may scratch your bumper on extreme cirumstances but that not a worried for a daily like mine. Probably don't what that on a show queen.

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

We used to fabricate our bumpers when I was into 4 wheeling. We would weld chain hooks up. That way all you need is chain. A broken chain with no hook can still be used.

We always called these Jeep hooks, the accessory hooks made for 4wds. Back when people ran brush guards these hooks would be attached at the bottom of the side plates. The first set of factory tow hooks I bought were new take off. They came from a K/5 original owner who removed the factory tow hooks to mount a brush guard. TSC sells the Jeep hooks. Clips are offered for mounting under the frame. These hooks are inexpensive and they work

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

Thanks for the link 71! I am holding that as a possibility, but would like to find something that hangs a bit lower to avoid scratching "the queen". I do plan on driving this truck regularly - rain or shine. I am looking forward to my fist new truck and hope to keep it looking good for as long as possible.

I have an 85 K20 and the front hooks look like they hang down quite a bit, but I have not had the time to check the measurements to see oif they will work on the 72. I did look at the rear frame and it sure is tucked up high above the rear bumper...not sure what needs to be done their to mount a hook of some sort....maybe a tow bar, even though I would like to avoid that.

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

Special, I think I have seen these at the local farm stores. Are you saying that there is an option that mounts directly to the frame or additional bracketry would be needed. I have the stock repop chrome bumpers front and back and need to get the hooks down below them.

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

I have hooks like the ones Tim posted above. Very affordable and very tough. Single rear hook is bolted to the bottom of the step bumper. The front hooks are bolted to the bottom of the frame rails. I used a small spacer, about 3/16" thick, so the hooks will clear the front bumper. Truck is still in paint prison so no pics, sorry.

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

Instead of using a chain that will scratch your bumper use a tow strap. They shouldn't hurt your bumper.

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

I have used 73-80 hooks before. They are flat with good girth. The 81-91 square body version are different.

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

I have the ones like Tim posted on the front of my Jimmy. Had a set on my old C2500 ‘70 as well. And they are handy dandy if you need to pull from the front.

Anymore I can weld and fab and am a front receiver guy. Gives you more options. On my kids ‘72 Jimmy we used the same off-road hooks but I mounted a bolt on receiver that sandwiches between the hook and the frame that gives you both options.

Receivers make great tow points for straps. Just put the eye of the strap in and insert the 5/8” hitch pin through the eye and pull away.

Re: Non-Stock Tow Hooks Front and Rear Options?

You guy's don't send me death threats.... but I installed late model F150 tow hooks, used one existing hole and drilled one. They hang down enough to get a strap or chain thru them.

I think they look nice since they are chrome and don't stick out to far, they will serve the purpose should I ever need them.
