What type of metal is used for exhaust systems?
I want to make my own exhaust system. I am an electrician by trade and we have a pipe bender on our job. I am going to take my electrical bender home and bend up my exhaust using 1/2" EMT and take it too work and match the bends in 2". I plan on using good ol' cherry bombs with 2" inlets and outlets. So I have a couple of questions.... What type of tubing should I buy for the exhaust? And, anybody have any ideas on flaring the end of the tubing so it fits over the muffler ends? Or is there I double ended female fitting I could use. Please excuse my uncertainty, mis-use of terms or lack of knowledge on material used in making exhaust systems. This will be my first go at it and I can use all the answers I can get.
Thanks. Chris S. |

You can buy the 10' sticks @ any muffler shop.
The cheaper stuff is 16ga cold rolled steel, the good stuff is aluminized steel, its 14ga. |

Re: What type of metal is used for exhaust systems?
most pipe benders for electrical conduit dont do exhaust pipes // buy a cheap piece of exhaust tubing and see if it will work first b4 spending alot of time and effort on your project

Re: What type of metal is used for exhaust systems?
Actually the cheap stuff is mild steel, aluminized is better and "good stuff" is stainless steel. As opposed to bending it yourself and getting pinch bends, just buy a universal ready to install exhaust system from Summit, like $200 and they are all prebent, and preflared to install with a slip/weld or slip/clamp.
Here ya go, complete header back with mufflers in 2.5" for $175!! http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Crud, here is a 2.25" for $150 with mufflers!! http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Step it up to $270 and you get the whole shooting match, headers, pipes, mufflers, clamps, etc, etc, etc!! Gotta LOVE SUMMIT!! (no I don't work there, I just love helping guys save $$$ and more importantly, FRUSTRATION!! http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Last edited by 70rs/ss; 12-30-2008 at 02:55 PM. |
