1964 AAW harness thru Firewall Difficulty - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This is my first post - thanks in advance for any help.
1964 C10 stepside that I bought on Halloween. Original wires all cut up - many missing.

I bought the American Auto Wire complete harness kit.
Reusing the original grommet for the front light harness, I'm having a heck of a time getting the sockets into each other to meet at the firewall. Having one on the inside and one on the engine side and connecting thru the firewall - like the original.
I'm I doing this wrong? Should they both be on the inside and use a new different style grommet ?
