Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
I bought a 1/2 ton with a 5 inch rear drop. No notch. Looks like stock shocks. Hard ride and it bottoms out. Thinking about air shocks, but don't know which ones to get? Just buy the ones that show up as stock replacement on Amazon? Or do I need something different? Thanks

Shock extenders and/or helper bags is my suggestion.

Re: Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
If you get extenders then stock length is fine. If you don't I'd get a couple inches shorter.

Re: Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
No idea, most people buy drop shocks I think. I used extenders myself.

Re: Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
I bought / installed Bell Tech drop shocks up front. But with wanting air shocks in the back, I couldn't come across any drop air shocks. so with buying the 67 Impalla air shocks, basically they are drop shocks because they are just a tad over 2 inches shorter than the stock size for my C1500. I should be installing them tomorrow. I'll update to see how it worked out

Re: Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
Worked out great. Having them 2 inches shorter than stock really made a positive difference. When I air them up, it doesn't raise the ride height, but gives me the firm ride I was after. No more bouncyness. I think if I would have used the stock height ones, it would have raised the ride height to get the firmness I was after. That would defeat the lowered stance purpose. I'm happy with them. $65 delivered, and a few hours in the garage.

I don't have any pictures of the install. The only difference between the Impalla shocks and the stock shocks is the bottom mount is narrower. So I used some heavy washers to fill the gap. I also reamed out my bottom mounts to accept a 5/8 Grade 8 bolt. They are metric, and just a hair under 5/8ths. Those were the only mods needed. Real easy install |

Re: Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
The pictures of the shock look like one side has one big 5/8 bolt and the other has two small maybe 5/16 bolts. Is that just a generic picture?

The hardware that comes with them you won't use. You reuse your top bolts / nuts. Buy twp 5/8ths bolts and nuts and some thick 5/8ths washers and your good to go |

Re: Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
So I know it's been a while but how are these holding up? I recently came across some Corvette air shocks and was wondering how these might compare. I have a 4x4 axle under mine with leaf springs so the shock mounts are both the big single bolt type. per haps if I used the amazon ones above I could press out the double bolt mount and put in one big bolt.

Re: Air Shocks for a 5 inch drop ?
My Suburban was lowered with a Belltech kit including the notch but would still bottom on hard bumps.
It was converted when I got it and they had used those red urethane pancake bump stops which is stupid. It was just like hitting the frame! They have no cushion at all. After some debate I purchased a set of Bel Tech bump stops. They are actually a little to long and I was going to trim them but decided to just run them and see what happened and I LOVE THEM!! No more frame rattling bottoming out. They cushion it perfectly and I have yet to even feel it bottom out. I am sure it does but they absorb the blow perfectly. |
