Ticking Sound

I've had a Tick coming from the drivers side of the engine since I got the truck. I always thought it was a small exhaust leak coming from the manifold until I read a post about a sticking lifter causing a tick. Do these sound remotely similar? Is it possible that I've been downplaying the more serious problem? I'm trying to hold off on the exhasut manifold until I'm ready to do the entire exhaust system, but I don't want to put off finding the prob if it's possible that I'm over looking a bad lifter.

Yes, they do sound very simular. You can cut a 3-4' lenght of heater hose, & with the eng running put the hose to your ear, then run the other end around the ex manifold where you suspect the leaks.......if its leaking, you will hear it. Good luck.....crazyL

I have used loooooooooong screwdrivers to do the same think, with the handle against my head, just in front of my ear. The hose trick isn't a bad one, but if the engine is hot, the hose may melt.....and stink. Also, stethescopes are made to do the same thing, with a probe in lieu of the attachment used by medical personnel to listen to our heart/lungs.

The weekest part of a GM motor is the cam it's common for only one or two lobes on the cam shaft to wear out.This could be the cause of your ticking. To check this remove the rocker cover from the side you suspect the noise is coming from and start the engine up notice the travel on the rocker arms. They should all travel approx. the same amount. If you find one or two rocking noticable less than all the others chances are your cam is shot. But check your exhuast first.

Cam is less than a year and a half old with less than 5000 miles on it. Shouldn't be the cam should it?


College, no it only looks like its going to blow up. Heck a bomb couldn't really hurt the appearance much.

Tynee, as a rule if the cam breakin is done properly you shouldnt see to much problem with wear. that first 20-30 minutes is critical(fast fire up, & run 2000-2500 for the first 20-30 min). After that, they are usually good for 50,000-100,000 milesIf you have a lobe going bad, you will see a lot of silver in the oil drain bucket when doing oil changes. another thing to check, is the adj nuts on the rockers......if they are original, & have been off/on a few times, sometimes they dont hold position & you will have 1 or 2 loose that will "talk " to you. Tynee I'd try the trans fluid trick, can't hurt it, Might be a dirty lifter, I added about a 1/2 quart to the oil and the ticking went away. The guys reply to my thread said just run it for 100-200miles then change the oil, worth a try.
