Grandfather's Tool Box - 1975 - pictures n' things

Howdy folks.

The link above goes to my photo album at google, shows my maternal grandfather's toolbox and the tools inside.

He passed away in 1975, so it is a bit of a time capsule.

Nothing fancy in it really, but there are a few interesting pieces in it to me. Besides, I'm sentimental about it, even tho' I was a baby when he passed, it is cool to have his tools.

There is one tool in there, I'm trying to figure out what it is.. this one here:

Anyway, if you have any interesting tidbits to add about any of the tools, I'd love to read them.

Most of them just seem to be plain jane parts store type tools... but I'm merely curious as to how old some of them are.

This is the other real interesting piece, my dad says it is a 'tack hammer' :

The pliers are not hoof nippers. The are usually referred to as "end cutters", and called end cutters in the MAC Tool catalog.

The tack hammer is used by upholstery guys to drive small nails which are known as tacks in the business. I have one that belonged to my grand father as well.

I wish I had more of his tools. You have a box full of memories and treasure there ... I'm truly envious. Good stuff.

The heads of the tack hammers are magnetic.
The upholsterer would put a bunch of upholstery tacks in his mouth, pointy end 1st, to hold them and then just "attach" a tack to the hammer; drive the tack & then attach another.
That way he had a free hand for stretching/pulling the material tight.

My bet on the nippers would be what they cut the horseshoe nails on top of the hoof where they were clinched on top. They used them to take the old shoe off, too.

The head of the one i have isn't magnetic, but has a slight "notch" in it to hold the tack so it can be started with a slight tap, then turn the hammer around to finish the job.

That would work for me.

I forgot "setting" the tack with one end and then turning it around to drive it.

The Wizard punch may be a Western Auto item, that was thier brand name in the 60s.

The pliers are called end nippers, here's some info on them.

makes me chuckle seeing these tools. The punch wizzard was sold at wester auto stores , they sold alot of wizzard tools. Seen an ignition tune u set of tools tool . Still have a lot of this same stuff in one of my boxes. Seldom used but I have it . T5hanks for the pictures and post. Its good!

I never met either of my grandfathers, I wonder how much I missed out on.
My paternal grandfather raised 11 kids,escaping Austria just after German invasion.
My father told me about going to the dump to find nails, then straightening them to build their house.
Hang on to that stuff, display it when you can.

Those end nippers were mostly a farrier`s tool for nipping off and pulling shoe nails.Carpenters use them as nail cutters still.I guess they would have been used for cobbling also.

I love the old folk`s time capsules.My wife`s paternal grandfather was a salesman and didn`t use tools much.But back then,even a guy like that still fixed and tinkered some.He had tin cans full of buttons,screws,bits & pieces of this`n`that.It`s just neat to keep it all together.I`ve had his stuff for over 20 years,now that`s even been a long time.
