Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

Sure, you can get 2.5 ramshorns from a lot of places. The reason you're having a hard time finding them is that they are called Vette manifolds. Trucks had 2 inch, Vettes 2.5 inch.

Last I saw, Summit has them under the Dorman brand.

Thanx TX Firefighter, but will they fit, because they go straight down instead of angle a bit?

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

I hear the straight down horns in a 2 wheel drive setup it's a real tight turn with the headpipes clearing the crossmember and oil filter, starter. In a 4 wd setup it may work.

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

I've got em in my 4x4 and the right side works fine on a 4x2, but the left is where you have a really tight fit... oh and I got mine on Ebay but had to grind a lot of slag and the old style alt bracket off as well.

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

2x4's you have to have a good exhaust man or pipe fabricator to make it work unless the engine is slid back. Anything is possible....Im about to do it.

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

That's a good thought - 6 cyl frame mounts will move the engine back to the same spot as a 4x4 the crossmember might still be close but much better -

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

I can confirm both.

The straight dump manifolds are a challenge for the exhaust shop on V8 engine mounts. It can be done, just takes more finesse. And, the inline 6 engine mounts mounts move it far enough back to make the pipes very easy.

You just have to decide what route is best for you in light of having to shorten the driveshaft and monkey with the shift linkage when moving the engine back.

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

i've got 26 years in the same muffler shop and the straight dump 2 1/2 manifolds are a pain in the a$$ on a 2wd with the motor in the stock location. it CAN be done but it's not fun. unless the shop has a modern bender the bends won't be pretty either. i believe the vette manifolds are still available from GM, that's where i bought mine a few years back. i did have to cut off the old style generator/alternator brackets. they are the next best option to headers-without the leaks, lol.

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

OK guys thanks for the advice. My engine is slid back a little and I know a good exhaustshop so I'm going to try it.
For what I read they are less noisyer and not leaking again and again like my headers.

Saw them too on Jeg's but on the site from Wysco they say that they are 2.1/4 instead of 2.5.
Don't know if that make's that much of a difference??

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

Those Jegs exhaust manifolds look great, I would guess I put at least 2 hours of clean up into the China made ones I bought on Ebay and they look almost that good.

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

Another option instead of the Ram Horns is C4 (84-96) Corvette manifolds. There are 2 styles, one for the Cross-Fire and Tuned-Port engines and another for the LT1s. The Early one is like a mini header. The LT1 one is cast iron. Both have true 2 1/2" outlets and both are overall dimensionally similar to a ram-horn manifold. If you buy the LT1 ones, insist on removing the heat shield before you buy. Some have a bad habit of cracking.

By the way, on a Corvette the last application of the 2 1/2" ram-horn was in '63. All the way '64-82 the outlet on a small-block was 2". Some of the hi-po small blocks had 2 1/2" exhaust, but they were 2" off the manifold and became 2 1/2" where they turned back. It is tight on a SB '63-82 Corvette on the right side idler arm using 2 1/2" in this area.

i have a set of the vette manifolds, i just replaced them with headers, do they really flow better than most headers? i like the sound of the headers more.

Re: 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds

Headers will always be king when it comes to sound...but you have to constantly tighten the header bolts or deal with exhaust leaks and replacing manifold gaskets. I have herd some trucks with the maifolds that sound great, too. Manifolds are just a little quieter.

I just discovered the 350/290hp crate recommends 2 1/2" exhaust.
Of course after I went out and located a beautiful set of Ram Horns with the
alternator mount lugs on passenger side, and had a shop bend up a set of pipes back to under the cab ready for mufflers.
Then like a real dummy just now looked at the specs for the engine.
Been reading a lot of exhausting lol detail about problems installing 2 1/2 pipes, and you come up with Vette 2" manifolds into 2 1/2"head pipe.
I wonder if the engine will be that much affected by the smaller exhaust size ? If for performance , racing and breaking things loss every one in awhile ya, but for every cruising?

I have the 2 1/2" vette style installed on my truck. It is very tight to the starter but possible. My exhaust is 2 1/2" polished tube tucked up into the frame.
