stripping paint
Hey I just wanted to check my method of stripping. I am stripping my tailgate and decided to use my angle grinder with one of those cup wire wheels. It is doing a great job, not even scratching the steel. I plan to go over it again with a DA to rough it up before paint. This works so good that I am nervous I am doing something wrong. I have attached some links of what I am using. I need some opinions

you might think you dont have scratches only paint will tell the truth
i personally use wire cups and brushes as a last resort as i dont like theembeded flying wires in my skin

soda blasting is the best way to get it done. If the money isnt there for a shop to do this for you than wire wheel will work fine, just very messy and as cdowns said the fun of the wires breaking off and sticking in your skin. I usually get my exterior panels soda blased and after words will prep the metal with 80 or 120 grit on an orbital before applying any etching primer or sealers.

soda blasting is never good as you never get it competely cleaned. so x3 on that one. blasting is the best way for getting as much as possible but you have to use the right media.

i really like the corse 3m scotch brite whells in a drill. it's pretty tedious but it cleans it off nice and won't overheat.

I use the discs in my grinder that look like corral. Not sure of their official name, but I never have an issue with heat and it takes it right down to bare metal.

soda blasting is not an option, funds are too tight. I have tried just about everything I have in my garage. DA, sand blaster the black discs in the drill, I think they are the brite wells mentioned above, and 80 grit on a 6" low speed sander, that works great on large flat panels, but this angle grinder with the cup wheel seems to beat them all, and I don't mind the occasional wire bur stuck in my gut. So if there are no other negative effects from using it, I will continue. Funny story however. I was using a regular wire wheel when rebuilding my dads corvette. I got a wire stuck in my alkalies tendon, shoved over 75% into my foot. was almost unable to walk then I saw what the problem was, a pair of pliers and instant pain relief. so be careful, you never know where those wires will end up.

I've done the grinder/wire wheel thing for badly rusted areas also. I also used a bronze wire wheel on the bed floor which I later primed and painted with rustoleum. Since it was the bed floor, I didn't have to worry about scratches but I really didn't notice any detrimental scratches. I get more with the sanding discs from what I've experienced.

Chris make sure when you remove the paint to metal you condition the metal& use a good etching primer on each panel. the wire wheel works ok for removing paint. use eye protection for sure. keep the rpms low. when I did my truck I only stripped what I could finish that day hope this helps cheers, Pat

Those are what I use....except I found some that are blue and really work well....have to find the company again online as they were 1/2 price of the name brand ones and have actually lasted longer!!!

I use 80 grit on my National Detroit DA, It sounds like coarse grit but it really is not, it works great 1 hr to strip the hood and 2 hrs for the doors inside and out, makes lots of noise and dust but works great and will not damage metal and a whole roll of disks is 40$ for the good 3m ones and that will do an entire truck
the next step in prep is to wipe it down with wax and grease remover and lay some high build epoxy down, I over reduce the first coat to get in all the surface imperfections and then spray it as directed and then do 2-3coats , then guide coat and block then if I sand through I re prime and block again.....then primer sealer wet sand with 400-600 depending on paint specs and ready to go |

Sounds like a plan, when I use the wire cup, I have a high speed angle grinder, it seems to polish the metal, I don't see any scratches. as for the rest of the steps, I have heard a few dozen different ways to paint. here is how I do it.
1) focus on obvious damage, a) cut and weld, b) or strip paint, scratch with 26 and bondo 2) strip rest of panel, will not use chemicals any more, bad luck 3) scratch with 80 - 180 for primer 4) wipe with prep solve 5) paint 1 - 2 coats of epoxy primer, 6) paint with 2-3 coats of 2K high build same night as epoxy 7) sand 8) guide coat and wet sand 9) let sit and move to another body panel 10) once all panels are done, paint color your thoughts

the soda blasting is not a bad thing, it just isn't always done correctly, One has to completely flood the work after blasting, neutralize with vinegar, flood again, but it is too expensive a media to use in small sandblast units, I just walnut shell blasted my 66 gmc, it took 5 hours and 12 bags of walnut hulls, sure beat the heck out of sanding , grinding, chemical stripping, etc.
here is a link: ps the walnut shells cost .27 cents per lb and we used 600 lbs, wish I would have known they are reusable we would have cut this amt in half. Easy Ingersoll Rand makes them so does Multi Quip #A2!! They are a big industrial compressor mounted on it's own trailer. I have used one that had a Ford V8 with one side compressing the air and the other running the engine!! Pretty sweet set up!!!!!!!!!

Thats funny , I did the same . I drug a 185 ingersoll home on the weekends . Had to borrow an air dryer because of the moisture .But after tweaking the regulator it worked fine .

Glad I found this thread, We have a 210 cfm GrimmerSchmidt tow-behind compressor and a 50 gal pressure blaster with dryer in our rental fleet. Can you run walnut shells through a sand blaster ? If so what size tip is needed ?
I've used it with sand blasting trailers just don't know about using walnut shells..... Thanks
