Need some measurement help...

If some of you out there would be so kind as to take a few measurements for me I would be much obliged. Since I was so gung ho to get started on my project I forgot to take some measurements. Here goes:

All measurements off of 63-66 will work.

First is the rear of the frame where the bumper bolts to it I need the side to side measurement from each frame rail to get the total width. The outside to the outside of each rail would be perfect.

Seconed is at te rear still but from the bottom of the frame rails to the bottom of the stock bed rails. Trying to figure out how much room is back there for a fuel tank.

Thanks a bunch in advance, guess that measure twice saying would have been handy a few weeks ago!!

when you say stock bed rails do you mean the cross sills? if so, the "bottom of the stock bed rails" is the top of the frame. or did you mean the top of the bed rail/cross sill (i.e. the bottom of the bed)? that is, the total of the cross sill and the frame.

Re: Need some measurement help...

Aerotruk, thanks for that diagram, it is a great piece of information to have and takes care of my first measurement.

Fleetside, yeah I am wondering what the measurement is from the bottom of the frame to the bottom of the bed slats, not the cross sills, if I remember right ther is a cross sill at the end by the rear bumper and it front so there will be some room just behind the rear axle. Unless I was missing one on my truck.....

Re: Need some measurement help...

slammed, on my long bed fleetside there are 3 cross sills and 2 frame cross-braces after the rear axle. one of the cross sills sits midway between the 2 frame braces. I think most guys put the tank between the 2 braces, if so you have 27" of width and 16½" front-to-back (the outside-outside measurments in the diagram above aren't really helpful because the frame rail width changes and the lower lip is a wider section than the top). unless you leave out the cross sill, you can't install any higher than the top of the frame. the frame also tapers in height at this section but is about 4½", meaning of course that any tank depth beyond that would hang below. cross sills are 2¼" tall so you could gain a couple of inches by leaving it out, but I don't think I would.

I would think the shortbed is the same behind the axle, but I'm not certain.

There was a thread and some links on the subject recently you might try to find.

Re: Need some measurement help...

Fleetside-
I won't be using the two rear cross braces, only one at the very rear by the bumper. What kind of room will there be front to back if the frame cross braces are removed? I will be building new crossmembers so can can put them where ever I want.

Re: Need some measurement help...

Slammed, removing both riveted braces gives around 32", allowing for say 1" clearance behind the track bar. on my '66 the driver's side of the front brace is where the bracket for the track bar also mounts, but your '63 may be a little different. that corner might take away a couple of inches if you're keeping the track bar.

removing just the back brace gives about 28" because of the way the front brace angles back on the passenger side.

these measurements are rough since I don't have the rear cross sill on and I wanted to error on the side of giving you clearance.

Re: Need some measurement help...

Fleetside-
Thanks a bunch man, that is exactly the info I am looking for. Just needed to know if I would be able to build my tank with enough capacity to drive more than around the block and has the clearance to lay frame. I will be setting up my chassis in a couple weeks so I will keep you updated on how I works out.
