1966 SBFS project low and go

Most of you that have seen my threads know i have what i refer to as the " field of dreams" in my backyard. That is the name i have given to the fleet of rusting project trucks sitting in my field. What I wanted for my next build is a porterbuilt front end , a big C notch in the rear, full air ride, some patina, fresh cab paint, pounding stereo, air conditioning,Chrome bumpers front and rear and fresh wiring. So i went into the field picked a frame out , then a cab that is 100% mint and lastly the best short box fleetside I had. This is were things take a turn.....I have several projects on the go now that i wanted to take a break from and was just going to start wih some mindless tear down and getting things ready in the line but not really get into it. Then....yes there is more...I saw a members truck for sale on the for sale page that was started already, normaly not my thing to want a truck thats half finished because i have a few of them now.....lol. But i made contact we talked priced but couldn't come to terms....you know how that goes. Then a week or so later it was on ebay and the bidding started....and no i didn't buy it there either. I was the high bidder but below the reserve that was placed on it. I was contacted by the seller again and I passed on it yet again. Since the truck was built it's had atleast 2 maybe 3 owners and never put back together or finished. After a while I ended up cashing up for the truck just because I already almosted owned in 3 times already and someone needed to finish this truck.

Re: 1966 SBFS project low and go

The truck has had some good work done to it....and there is some stuff that just doesn't work for me. Plus i still had my original build ideas I wanted from a scratch built truck.

Re: 1966 SBFS project low and go

Some of the good..:
-It already has a porterbuilt front end in it with power rack and disc brakes
-It already has a Big C notch
-Both look good and are installed as far as i can see well
-The air bags look good
-Tires and wheels look great ....not sure if i will switch them out yet

Parts...
-Has as extra all the tubular A arms and hood hinges all porterbuilt

Body
-The cab is in good shape
-The box sides are in awesome shape
-The bumpers are in great shape
-No inner fenders....

The not so good
- Both doors aren't great
-The wiring is started and will need to be taken out and started over
-The brake lines
-Fuel lines
- The bed floor boards...not my thing
-The rear tubs .......not my thing
-The bed frame work and steel....all needs to be taken out and replaced from scratch
-Air system

Re: 1966 SBFS project low and go

Did i metion there is no engine and tranny ......just a big hole ?.......In fact I am having some faith that a engine/tranny and driveshaft have been in the truck. Because when it's bagged all the way down I look at the rear end.....then i look at the bottom of the cab and say to myself......Gee that looks close I wonder if it clears. Also shows the air set up....and where it is....

I just like the way the factory tubs look.....even if you have to cut them, stretch them or add to them. I guess it's one of my things as my kids would say

Re: 1966 SBFS project low and go

Not 100% sure on this just yet......but i think this what I am going to drop in a 500 hp 383.......I am also considering a stock 283 that has been feshed up and detailed but stock right to the air cleaner.....But my lat build was a LS2 and i really like it....so I haven't made up my mind but I am going to try and knock this out quickly

Re: 1966 SBFS project low and go

Well this is the part some unhappy truck builder is going to be mad at me but oh well ......See i have been wanting to a steel floor in one of my 64-66's and since the floor in my 58 got ruined now was the time to do it. I looked everywhere for something for a long time and decided to go with a 72 and up steel bed floor. All the used stuff i found was banged up bad and just not worth it.....then i looked at the repo floors and decided that was going to be the best bet.

Re: 1966 SBFS project low and go

Then i fond this.....a long box original new in the box floor in perfect shape.....excatly what i had wanted for my short box. I wanted the longer floor so i could do a few mods i had planned that had I had never been able to pull off on past builds.

Now upfront.....where i am if i want to drive it much we need to run inner fenders....or i will be cleaning under the hood for hours. We get so much rain and sometimes it just starts with out warning and i like everything to be driven so.....

Re: 1966 SBFS project low and go

I bit the bullet on the doors......I have a set of brand new doors sitting in my shop ....and a fixed set ready to go .....and after all that i decided to fix the old ones from the truck to keep as much of the paint as close as i can....granted it's not all original i went that direction anyway....So peeled them off and cut the bottoms and am in repair mode with them now....like i said i want to bang this project out and get it on the road for the spring. Drive season is short enough that i don't want to spend it working on trucks when i should be driving them.....a lesson learned from last year....lol

Dude, you're a maniac!

This truck is definitely in the right hands, and it's going to be killer. I remember this truck a while back on this site. I remember it originally had a small block in it and the guy lived in Arizona(?). Then, I think it got sold to someone who was going to put an LS motor in it?

Either way, I have always liked the truck. I'm glad you wound up with it.

It would be great to see the "old" build. Can't wait to see what happens next.
