Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

2 owner, 133K, no rust, loaded, got 18mpg on the trip from Indiana to Pennsylvania. Fuel pump and 4x4 module have been done recently. I replaced the drivers door pins and bushings, much better now. Pulled the stock rims and just picked up these 2005 Tahoe wheels off CL. Appears to have a HD rear end due to the size of the rear drums. Any info on those...

Fyi my dad bought this truck in 1999 with 90k and has barely used it in 14 years.

Update: Thanks "83GMCK2500" for decoding the SPID label. Outside of tinted windows this truck is pretty loaded up.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

Thought about my 15" bfg's but the offset was too much.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

Sold the old tires for $140 so the new one's cost me $310 total... not bad for like new 17" Wranglers on Z71 Tahoe rims.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

1500s had either an 8.5" 10 bolt rear axle or a 9.5" 14 bolt rear axle. The larger rear axle were on trucks with both the Z71 and F44. Z71 being the common offroad package that GM offered, F44 is listed as a "Heavy Chassis Package", has the larger rear axle and brakes.

Thanks for the info, must be a 14 bolt...

Not bad, the Tahoe rides nicer though.

BTW this was a free truck, family special.

Z71 never included the 6-lug 14-bolt SF, it was only available via the F44 option.

I have seen plenty of Z71's with factory 10-bolt's.

I said BOTH the Z71 & F44, not either. The OP clearly has a Z71 and he observed larger brakes, that is why I mentioned both. I have also seen several Z71s with 10-bolts.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

Thanks... Truck did really well on the trails today, had to back up a rough hill that I shouldn't have gone down. Punched the 4hi button and took off, no issues.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

Noticed that the brakes on the pass side were getting low. Picked up new pads, new rotors, reman calipers and new hoses. Cost $129!!!!

Had $20 in autozone rewards and my mil discount... can't believe that they were that cheap, $16 for each caliper! $22 for each rotor...

Z71 has nothing to do with the brake size? F44 is the reason he has larger brakes?

not really getting what you are trying to say.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

Cold weather is here and I lost my first Oxygen sensor. Changed it out and am waiting for the code to clear, might have to get a buddy to reset it.

BTW, Amazon has them for $30 vs Autozone for $52...

14-Bolt SF was not part of Z71 option.

It is part of F44 option.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

I have both options hence the reason my z71 has it...

next question is what the purpose of the second battery? Heard it's for camping or something? My dad took the battery out.

Re: Just picked up a 1996 Silverado

Makes sense... I have the same setup and I was confused. Didn't know you could have both options but thats what I have aswell.

As for the battery I guess it would be an auxillary battery for add ons? Not sure, mine came with a compartment box in the same spot.

Mine has this, the wires aren't that large so it doesn't run the engine.

It is part of F44 option.
That is a SF 14 bolt 9.5 inch rear and it was offered on certain years of Z71s. 95-98 I believe. It was also in the light duty 3/4 tons and the 454SS as a 5x5 lug if anyone is looking for an extra heavy bolt in rear end.
