Drove 70 miles in 4 wheel drive without knowing. Need indicator!

Drove my grandaughter home a few days ago, 70 miles and my trans case in my 72 K1500 was in four high, seems she hit the lever with her feet. I doubt I did any damage except burning a little extra gas but I would like to know next time! I had plans to instal an indicator light but never got to it. Any of you done this? What type of switch did you use? I'd like to see what you guys have come up with!

Were your hubs locked? If not, nothing happened except driveshaft turning.

QU30048 Weather-Proof Indicator Switch is used in place of Poppet Plugs on NP205 Transfer Cases on trucks with dash or floor mounted 4x4 shift indicators. A Genuine OEM replacement for Chevy and GMC 1 ton trucks with sealed electrical connecters. Will also replace QU10515 blade type switches used on Ford, Dodge, and older GM trucks if optional QU90002 Pigtail is spliced into your indicator circuit. Made in U.S.A.

After that description I'm thinking I need two (twin sticked 205) but not at $115 a switch

NP203 had a simple pushbutton switch on the shifter. I wired one side to ground, the other thru a light on my dash. You might be able to adapt it to yours. I made my twin stick set up, switch in on the 4 lock lever, I can figure out if its in high or low by engine speed! I got my switch at an electical supply store, standard threaded housing with two wires and about 1/2" throw. I wired the led thru a switch under the dash so i can turn the lamp off if I am off road a long time.

Biggest of Daves:

Ya ya, I think I will not worry about it at all even if my hubs are locked in...! I also have a twin stinker NP205.

This has never been an issue for me. I guess any time I've piled three people in the cab I've made sure they stay away from the shifter. I seem to recall keeping an eye on their legs and saying something,to the point they got tired of hearing about it and kept there dang leg off my lever! Other than that I just know if it's in or out

Re: Drove 70 miles in 4 wheel drive without knowing. Need indicator!

I once drove about 40 miles in 4-lo, but I knew it. Couldn't get it into 2-hi and didn't want to tow it. I thought I was going to need to rebuild the motor seeing as I had the tach pegged just to move at a decent speed. I know very stupid I was a young kid at the time. Plus side was nothing happened with the t-case and downside was the motor leaked oil after that. I wouldn't worry about it the 205 t case is bullet proof.

Check this thread out. I thought it was pretty slick. I was planning on doing something similar, but ended up going with a vac gauge so I no longer have an empty spot in my cluster.
