Flex plate replacement. 69 350 c10

I have a 2 pc driveshaft. Does this have to be removed or can I disconnect the middle bearing? If so does this provide me enough room to pull the tranny back 4 in? If I disconnect the drive shaft at the back yoke can I pull the drive shaft thru? Done a lot replacement etc but never changed a flex plate by moving the tranny back.

Also how far can I move this without disconnecting any thing else?

If anyone can walk me thru this step by step it would appreciated.

Thank you

You'll have to pull the driveshaft at the differential yoke. The center of it is set up with a bolt holding the yoke of the front onto the shaft and retaining the support bearing. You'll have to pull the bolts out of the support bearing to the crossmember to get it out. The shift linkage, kickdown cable, and vacuum line and speed will need to be removed. You wont be able to get it slid back enough to do the job otherwise. Might as well pull the tranny basically. Shift linkage and all will probably get bent if you try to leave it hooked up. 4 in is probably not enough room to do the job.

There is another active post on this. No, you do not have to pull the trans to change a flexplate.

That's right, you do not! I did mine the way mechanical man suggested in that other thread. Just spin the engine over with the dust cover removed to allow you to remove the torque converter bolts from the flexplate, drop the trans cooler lines at the rad, slip the trans back 2 in so you can get a wrench on the flexplate bolts and remove them. I had to drop the driveshaft at the diff to allow the trans to move back enough to get a torque wrench on the flexplate bolts but that was it. Slide the old flexplate out, slip the new one in and reverse the process. Spending part of a morning shining the garage floor with the back of my shirt has gotten to be normal so the job didn't take long. About 1.5 hours from dropping the dust cover to bolting it back on. I might have gotten it done in less time with a lift but who knows?
