Ac brackets bolt size

I am gathering parts to put the AC back in my truck. I bought some stock brackets that bolt onto the block and I need the bolts to attach them. I picked up a few popular sizes outta the bolt bin at work and none of them worked. The one I tried is on the front of the block by the water pump. Does anyone know what size and length is used. These are for a big block.

Re: Ac brackets bolt size

You probably already know the thread diameter (more than likely 3/8" N.C.T.) by having removed the original bolt. To know how long a bolt you need I would put the bracket up against the hole and then put a pencil in the hole till it bottoms out. Mark the part of the pencil (or hold your fingernail on it) sticking out. You need a bolt 1/4" less in length than that.

Re: Ac brackets bolt size

No I do not know the diameter the PO did not have the brackets or bolts. The common size bolts I tried don't fit . I didn't look at the sizes of bolts when I snagged them out of the bolt bin, just got the sizes I thought were close

Try a 3/8-16 national coarse bolt in the hole s you want to use. They will either be that size or 5/16-18 UNLESS your engine was made after 1980 then they are likely metric.

Re: Ac brackets bolt size

Well I found my problem the bolt size is 3/8 but the threads on the head are stripped. Is it possible to tap the hole to the next size. The things the PO did just amaze me. Any suggestions

Re: Ac brackets bolt size

I would start with a 3/8" x 16 starter tap. The beginning threads on the tap are tapered enough to get into the good threads. Then you should be able to tap with a #2 or bottom tap to clean them up. If that doesn't work there is plenty of material around the bolt hole to jump to a 7/16" or 1/2". Carefull, don't go any deeper.
