Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
My truck has a fresh built 292, factory 3 speed on the column shifter. I acquired a TR6060 from a 2010 camaro. It needs 2nd and 4th gear syncros. that I can do myself no problem.
My goal is to adapt the TR6060 to my 292. From my research the current bell housing is specific to the camaro. the bell housing and "front cover" of the transmission are one piece. So I will have to find a diffrent front cover and an adaptable bell housing to a SBC type bolt pattern. before I stick too much money into this project I want to make sure I can sucessfully adapt it to my 292. Does anyone know for a fact what front cover for the trans I should be looking for? would one from a ls style t-56 work? Keep in mind the tr6060 does have an oil pump and oil cooler. I'm also aware of the fact this is a flange style output shaft not a slip yoke type. So I will either have to convert it to slip yoke or get a driveshaft with a special extending joint. (not sure of the technical term) I'm also aware I will need to do extensive modifications to my floor. If all this is feasible I would love to make this a column type shift. Any help or advice would be appreciated. |

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
That's an ambitious project!
You'll need a tall rear gear so your 292 will pull 6th gear. Likely a 4.88 or 5.13 will be needed. And a 6 ott is gonna be interesting with a top load shifter. |

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
right now the rear end is a 3.73, with my tires it would be at about 1400 rpm in 6th gear at 60 mph. the motor has head work, large valves, long tube header, offenhasuer intake, with a 4 barrel demon carb. and a small torquey cam. she goes pretty good. I plan to try the gearing as is, then go from there. after all. I'd have 6 gears to choose from!

I going with geezer on this one..that's some more undertaking you got planned there..as if installing the trans isn't enough of a challenge then you want to pile it on with a column shift with 6 gears?.i know money and time can do anything ..but if you can get the trans in there you would be better off with a floor shift..there are much better, cheaper, and less hair pulling options out there..my advice would be to reconsider your options..

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
i'm not 100% set on column shift. If i can do it it would be awesome. but I would do a floor shift if needed. I would have started with a t56 which is much easier adaptable, but the tr6060 fell into my lap. I have $40 into the transmission 4 qts of new GM fluid. the trans only has 25k miles on it.
I've always been one to do the things eveyone tells me I cant. usually with success. I understand this is a very large project. which is fine with me. right now my #1 concern is adapting the trans to the engine. |

Even a floor shifter is tuff!
You'll be rowing the gears back behind the seat!! |

this truck is kinda a rat rod. so an abnormally long bent up floor shifter would not look out of place!

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
Regarding the drive shaft, you might be able to adapt a 2-piece driveshaft setup. When mated to a TH400, for example on something like a C30, it would have a bolt-on yoke with a slip joint at the second section. Those parts are rather prolific to find. Most guys try to go the opposite direction and swap out the 2-piece for a 1-piece and then have to change the trans output shaft to a slip yoke.
The whole project sounds like an interesting idea. I don't know enough to answer your bellhousing question, sorry. It sounds like it would work with a SBC bell, but I'm not convicted about it. I'm also not going to tell you not to do it. In fact, I'm all for doing things people say can't be done! But rowing a column shifter through 6 gears, you may just reach the limit of travel in the column. Or the gears may be so close together, it may not be fun. If I had 6 gears on a rat rod, I'd want a tall crooked shifter on the floor man... where 6th is in the passenger's lap. LOL!

Like I said "anything" is possible but sometimes cheap isn't cheap..and I know what you mean, , around here I'm the king of doing things that "can't" be done..haha..somewhere somehow every mod done to our trucks there was someone who was the first to do it..

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
Awesome project to take on man! Would love to see some pics of the 292. I did one as well. Never regretted it yet. It outta pull those gears fine, long as your not trying to pull a hill. haha Can't really help on the subject, but sounds like a neat plan. If you find a way I would like to share it with the folks at the Inliner's club.

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
The driveshaft will be fairly simple. You'll just need a flange to bolt to the output flange that will accept a u-joint. If you have a short wheel base truck, behind the U-joint will be a slip yoke. If you have a long wheelbase truck, I would stay with a 2 piece driveshaft and the HD carrier bearing. Then the slip yoke will be behind the carrier bearing. This is basically how GM did it with the SM420/465 trans
I am not at all familiar with that trans, but could an adapter plate be used between the 292 and the bellhousing?

Good looking engine you got there..makes me think of my hot built 250 I've got stuffed away..not knocking your truck but it looks as if you have some bed support issues going on..cab looks level but the bed looks to be running down hill..or maybe its just the pic..

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
Just an update, been doing some measuring recently to see if this is all going to fall together so far everything measures out pretty close, going to do a mach up fitting of the trans on a chevy 350 that my buddy has out of his model A Ford tonight. Need to see what happens with that and go from there.
As of right now I haven't started to take my truck apart. Trying to do as much research and test fitting as possible before I tear into it. If this mock up is successful I will move to step #2 which will be mocking up the trans in the truck. Then move to master cylinder and driveshaft fitting. I'll keep you updated |

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
transmission fits right up using a 26 count spline clutch disc, however the slave cylinder does not compress enough to allow the engine to bolt together. If i remove the factory slave cylinder it bolts together flawless. I'm now on the hunt for a shallower slave cylinder.

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
Got a slave for a 97 chevy truck 2wd. its shallower and bolts to the trans perfectly. it may be too shallow and require a spacer, which is no big deal they appear to be readily available in many thicknesses. I went ahead and ordered the clutch master cylinder and line for the same make and model truck.
Next step is to remove old transmission and mach up the new one. I will need to fabricate a cross member and see if the trans clears my trans tunnel. Ill post pics once the old trans is out. |

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
Man nice build. Good choice to go with the authentic Alpine Green which was a 292-only engine color.
I built a 292 similar to yours: .030 over, Badger cast pistons, Crane 260H cam, 1.84 intake valves, Rhoads lifters, hi-flow oil pump, Offy intake, Clifford Research long-tube headers, Edelbrock 1404 500 CFM 4 bbl carb, angled crossover exhaust, Centerforce II clutch, SM465 4 speed, 3.73 Eaton Posi in a 12-Bolt Corp rear, 235/85R16LT tires -- all in a '68 C/10 Orange Stepside. Engine block is original to the truck when I bought it in 1973. Swapped in a built 292 in 1977, and put the OEM block up in crates. By 2002, my '77 build was blowing 50 weight smoke rings and running on 4 cylinders and it was time to rebuild. I will be trying out an HEI Distributor tomorrow. Attached some pics from rebuild, about 11 - 12 years ago, and much later [last year?] Anyway, since I never heard of a TR-6060 tranny I have no valid advice in that area, but if I was in a similar situation, I would mount the shifter on the floor between bucket seats, and move the center console as far back as necessary. I had a 4-on-the-tree shifter in a '61 Mercedes 190 [long ago and far away] and it was sometimes clunky to shift and would jam. I couldn't imagine a 6-speed column shift.

Re: Adapt tr6060 to 292ci I6 with 6 speed on the tree
just and update. trans is bolted in. had to get a block mount starter, made crossmember and measured for a custom driveshaft. top load shifter installed but not pictured. also new mcleod clutch installed with 26 spline disc. I have aquired all the parts to rebuild the trans including upgraded carbon syncros and upgraded shift for pads. trans is just in mock up stage right now. I still have to remove and rebuild and shim slave cylinder and mount clutch master.

Real pretty trusswork on that x-member.
''Toploader'' = 6 on the floor? Must be a low hump cab that doesn't unbolt.

yes going to be a 6 on the floor. I gave up on the 6 on the tree idea.. yes it is a low hump cab that will not unbolt.
