Ordered the Holley Sniper

I ordered the new Holley Sniper today and should have it maybe Monday depending on when it ships. Ordered it through my engine builder, his supplier had it on the shelf. Ordered the one with the classic gold color. Going to put this on my 66 in place of the Edelbrock 1406. I have a Boyd welding efi tank that I got for the LS swap on my 65 but sold the truck and going to use the LS in my 65 Suburban. I pondered this efi swap for a while and have been waiting on Holley to get this one done. I will post pictures when it gets here and updates on how it goes with the install.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

I'll be following this too.

It looks like a good kit and the reviews so far are good too. I did an unboxing video last week. I was hoping to install it then but put it off to this Thursday night. Lucky for me the 69 vette I'm putting it on somehow has a factory fuel return line.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Well almost time to get started. The last of the hose and fittings came in yesterday. Going to make sure I have everything (ordered all the correct stuff) I need this weekend and get started. Just filled the truck with fuel so I need to burn as much as I can off and then the fun begins.

After it is installed, and running for a good long run.. temp gun the computer.. and then after a 10 minute heat soak.. retemp gun it..
I think the placement of that micro ecu is going to be their undoing

Oh come on Jimmy,, thats why we invented old garden hoses (to siphon fuel to more needing cans and tanks) LOL,, GET BUSY!!

I'm anxious to hear how this turns out. If anyone can make something like this work it's Holley. They have been making A/F systems for longer than most of us have been alive, and making a EFI for longer than the Mellinials were more than a glint in their daddy's eye.

They had some 'learning' in EFI with the old Projection system but I think this is going to be heads and above any carb out there for day to day driveability.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Got a good start on it this weekend. Last thing to do is the throttle cable conversion and a final going over of all the systems before powering it up. I have taken pictures and need to resize them and I will post them up. Ran into a couple of snags with the install. First was with the truck with a cracked exhaust pipe at the cross over so I cut it out and replaced the section. Used clamps to put it all together and will go back and weld it up later. Second was the parts in the kit for the O2 sensor. The clamps the supply look good but the stainless in the T-bolts is soft and both clamps went to crap before getting very tight at all. So I had to come up with a solution and modified a band clamp for exhaust and that worked good. The manual could be better as the split it into 2 parts and it really needs to be one. The rest is well made and looks to be well thought out. A new thing is the linkage now has direct hook up for the 700R4. The cable mount plates are big and stiff but a little to thick for the GM cables to lock into. I took a file and cut a 45 degree angle on the sides that the cable lock on to to allow them to grab. This is important for the 700 I am running to keep the TV cable adjustment and alignment stable. I am going to do timing control so I installed a locked out MSD distributor and the adjustable rotor. They have direct support for it. Will see how it plays out in the next couple of days. Marv I had to run it down some. When I got out of racing I sold off all the fuel jugs but one.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Well time for an update. Had a problem with the system not seeing the distributor and traced that to a pin in the MSD connector that was not seated and when I plugged it in the wire pushed out the back. I did get it fired up and running for a bit. Then it shut off. Checked everything in the world and Holley tech was good at helping trace the issue. Gave up and went home and cut the grass. Went back yesterday with the next round of things that Holley wanted checked and all that looked good. Hit the key and it fired up. But it only ran till it got to about 140 degrees of water temp and shut off. Back to looking at stuff. The only thing I had not checked was the fuel pressure from the tank. With the Boyd welding tank and the Stealth pump it should easily make 60 psi but you never know. Hows 120+ psi. When I did the test it pegged my 120psi fuel pressure tester back around to the needle stop. So I cracked the return line to see what was up and no fuel. Back on the phone to Holley and it is the internal regulator is stuck. With the huge fuel pressure it could not cut the fuel back to meet the afr and ended up just to short of a duty cycle on the injectors for it to deal with. All the parts are on the way and I am going to pull the throttle body off tonight and have it ready for the regulator replacement as soon as it hits the door. Holley has been good about working with me on this. Really need my 66 back up and running. Driving the duelly is just not the same.

Just in case you don't know about it already, one of the best places for EFI info regarding the Sniper kit and the FiTech kit is at, http://www.chevelles.com/forums/89-efi/

They have a thread for Sniper tuning, which has a LOT of great info. I have the FiTech unit (which I haven't installed yet) and they have tons of info on that system too.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

I have been reading some on the Chevelle forum. More about the tuning capability of the system than trouble shooting. There is a good I have been reading and learning a bunch in the last couple of days. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/89-e...tings-etc.html Now to just get it running.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Well got the regulator changed and the system back on. Got up and running and drove it home. The timing map is not real good for the Vortec head with to much timing below 2000. I pulled the map off it and loaded the sniper software and put a timing profile in it that matched about what I was running in the E-curve I pulled out. Will put the tune in it tomorrow and see how it works. If the timing is close will let it do some learning and then start to fine tune it. It does start and idle good and I like the cable throttle conversion that went in with the efi. Much smother than the old setup.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Well that edit made it much better. Made another edit this morning and also added a little fuel in the area i was having a little detonation and plan to put about a 100 miles on it today to work on the learned fuel curve. Then will data log a run and use that info to fine tun it some more. So far so good but I need to figure out what to do with the hand held.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

That last edit helped and I drove the truck about 80 miles. I still have a small detonation issue but was able to get better MAP and RPM numbers on where it was happening to improve the map. Now on version 3 and will see if it continues to improve. This combo has always been timing sensitive and took a bit to get it happy with the edelbrock and e-curve. I just have much more ability to tune it now.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Sounds like the Sniper system is working out for you , I plan on ordering one this week along with a L31 Vortec long block engine .hopefully it will go as smooth as your Sniper install is going, and will be a good match for the L31

I am sure after several more weeks of short drives , the sniper system will be dialed in with no hitcups . I was going to go with a fi tech but I think you sold me on the Sniper I will be following along here for more info .....

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

The engine in the truck is the L31 Vortech head crate engine with a mild Comp cam, Edelbrock intake and a set of stainless long tube headers with a 700R4 and 373 gears. Previous setup was a Edelbrock 1806 Thunder series carb and the MSD ecurve distributor. If you get one down load the software and and manual and start reading. There are some things like the timing if letting it do timing control that will need to be done in the software. If you are not a good tuner seek someone local to help. The setup is coming around after the last mod to the programming and I am going to make another change before driving it home from work today. I have made a lot of changes to the baseline setting to get it to run well and like it, but it is not for those who just want to bolt it on and think it will be fine.

I have the L31 R also and ordered my sniper along with the dual sync distributor that Holley offers. Hoping this will be a good setup. Looks my TBI will not ship until 05/26 so I have plenty of time to prep.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

There are folks that have them in stock, you just need to check around. The vortec heads are not tolerant to timing and need 32 to 34 max and 4 to 6 degrees less then a standard small block in the curve. You will need to build a map for it before you try and run it. Do as Holley says in the instructions and get it running first with out timing control.

when you say you made a lot of changes to the base line settings do you mean just timing tables are the base settings as in re writing the entire map across the board .??

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Here is where I am at now and you guys need to understand I am a mad tinkerer and never really happy unless I am trying "to see what happens if". My buddy has a race engine shop and has done a lot of vortec head engines and really knows them well. This gives me access to lots of dyno information and a very good engine tuner. So now I'm looking at changing the intake to an open plenum super victor after we get the tune worked out with the duel plane. The vortec motors have a little trouble with feeding cylinder 2 and 6 with a dual plane intake and you can make them happy but you don't end up with a overall great tune with that setup. It will be good tune and a lot better than a carb can do but still not as good as you could get with an intake with more even runners. George has run that intake back to back on the dyno on crate dirt engines and power is better everywhere over the dual plane. The tune for a vortec is a pain compared to other small block heads and you have to deal with that. One of the things I am doing is timing control so my need to edit the map both on the timing tables and fuel tables is required. With so many combos out there to make it really run good you need to be able to work with the timing, the fuel tables, the enrichment tables, the IAC settings and understand the relationship they have with each other. Even on a stock small block it will not run good with just putting the base numbers in the hand held. You have to use the software to make the best of it all. The software manual is well written and if you have a good handle on tuning a carb and working with the timing curves in a distributor that will get you started. Just an example of what happens with just using the hand held is when you enter the timing a cruise and the base timing that become you timing curve. You will have 11 at idle rpm and 36 at 1700 through the entire map range except at wide open throttle. Not much except a race motor will run off that. You can down load the software and look at the base settings that Holley uses and easily see why you need to take a little time to learn it to get the most out of the system. I am still struggling a bit with the enrichment tables and getting better at those but I am in my first week with the software and it just takes a bit of time and testing to get it down. So if you are thinking about getting one down load the software and the manual and do some poking around.

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Looking at the super victor the basic operating RPM range is 3,500-8000. For a stock L31 R set up wouldn't you want one with a lower RPM range ?

Re: Ordered the Holley Sniper

Well thats for a carb, and its designed as a higher rpm carbed intake. It is also built with extra material in it so you can port it. That gives it a good match to the stock vortec intake port. With the efi we are not looking for a intake that delivers good signal at lower rpm ranges we are more in need of good equal length runners.
