How to prep chrome bumper for paint?
Is it possible to prep and then paint a chromed bumper?
I appreciate any insight on how to do this. All The best, Dirk |

Re: How to prep chrome bumper for paint?
I painted the front bumper on my plow truck because it was rusted & the chrome was flaking. I just hit it with a DA & whatever grit was on it. While I don't expect it to hold up well, it lasted through last season & still looks good. I wouldn't do it to a nice truck.

My bodyshop guy is going to etch my chrome winch bumper and paint it . I will try to remember to ask him tomorrow what he uses to etch it .

Thank You for your input! Now I am curious what all etching involves. I have a beater chrome rear sport bumper on the truck, I figured I would scuff and shoot with white paint to match my front bumper. I want to find a clean factory painted bumper to replace it with. but so far no luck. Thanks again for your thoughts! All the best, Dirk |

Re: How to prep chrome bumper for paint?
Sandblasting is the best method. Just a fair amount of light whisping from a distance...you are not trying to remove the chrome, just turn it dull & a bit rough. Give it a good coat of epoxy primer & do any bodywork from there. A couple coats of urethane primer & then you're ready to paint. Lorne
