New to me 1998 Silverado Extended cab

I added this '98 Silverado Extended Cab a couple weeks back. Paid $3,200, mainly because it runs so nice and the owner took amazing care of it. It's my DD while I work on my '74 Square Project.

180K, 5.0 (305 doesn't bother me in the least), very clean.

Has an issue with the CD Player a few says after buying it. My CD's started to skip, run slow, run fast. . . pretty much possessed. Not sure if the head just needs cleaning, if it has a bad laser reader, a wiring issue (doubtful). . .any insights appreciated here. I see them on EBay for around $50 (most likely a shot-in-the-dark). A lot are the skinny version in the radio cluster, while mine is the remote version below the radio cluster and temp controls. Looking to keep it OEM, as the after-market "kits" leave a lot to be desired.

Has an issue with the clear coat peeling, so I will be fixing that at some point.

Has the typical issue with the radio back lights needing replaced, so an afternoon with a soldering iron will correct that.

Has the typical issue with the center fold down backrest lid hinge being broken. That will take some time to fix, as I will be fabricating something more robust.

Has an issue with the torpedo speaker on the drivers door coming loose. Not familiar with how they are attached and whether I need a full replacement or not. Needs further investigating.

Has an issue with the temp control fan switch. Operates intermittently, sometimes skips speeds, randomly runs at different speeds. . . not sure what's going on there, so any insights would be much appreciated.

I don't know anything about these trucks, being a Square owner, but it seems that the door controls (locks, windows, etc) should be back-lit, as it is impossible to find them driving in the dark. Am I guessing wrong?

I bought a GM OEM Key Fob on-line for $29 and programmed it in 30 seconds. Dealer wanted $75 for the Fob and more to program.

Has a great toolbox, dry, and locks work great.
Has a great spray in bed liner.

Here are the photos. I will be replacing the Mag wheels with some OEM steel wheels and center caps when I finally find a pair. . . 5x5 Steels seem as rare as hens teeth. Other than the wheel swap and clear coat replacement, I plan on keeping it all stock.

Here is the CD Player I am having issues with. It's the remote version, since this truck actually came with a Cassette Tape. . . yeah, I know. Afraid to actually run a cassette in it, as my tapes from back in the day, are disintegrating.

Not sure what the skipping, slowing and speeding issues is and whether it's something that can be fixed or needing to be swapped out. Not looking for after-market; want to keep it OEM as much as possible.

Also, all the buttons below the Cassette and to the right of the volume knob, need the lights in the circuit board de-soldered and replaced. Lights are less than $10, and an afternoon on a slow day.

The FAN knob is as possessed as the CD. Wants to work at different speed on all settings but Low, which doesn't work at all. Sometimes the other settings wont work but I turn the knob and they will. . . but not always the speed it should be. Bad contacts? Bad Potentiometer? Dirty?

This is the Drivers Door Torpedo Speaker. It came loose. Not sure how it actually fits, as it won't snap back into place. I think I can feel "fabric" or possibly the dust shield, under the grill. Hesitant to just pull it off without knowing how it comes off. Seems to still be connected on the back end.

The fold down center rest lid hinge broke off. The hinge rod and tabs are intact and tight, but the lid parts are gone. So, I don't know what's missing exactly.

I know there are "repair kits" for the 1999 and up, but I have a 1998, so don't want to but the kit without knowing for sure it will work.

I am able to fabricate a more robust lid hinge bracket, if I knew what actually needed to be replaced and what the dimensions are, as I don't want the back of the lid to sit "above" the base, or to have the front unable to close because the lid hinge connection is too short, forcing the front of the lid into the air.

Any photos and measurements of a healthy lid hinge mechanism would be greatly appreciated!

I needed a good, clean start-n-go, all weather, comfortable truck for the shop and a DD; something where my passenger and I could actually hear each other! The '74 is taking waaaaay longer to get things done for a whole host of reasons.

So, I gave the Buick Regal to the wife, gave her '97 Camry to the daughter who had her Subaru stolen, and went looking for a truck for me.

Now to just fix the little issues.

Fixed the speaker grill. Popped off the whole control unit in the armrest. The grill has flimsy metal tabs that bend to hold the grill in place. One (now two) are tabs are broken, but I was able to get the rest to fit tight and popped the control unit back into the armrest. Still need to test the speaker to make sure it still works.

I found a new OEM Radio and slave CD player. Should be here next week. Will swap out the radio and then order the replacement lights for $9. Re-solder the lights and save the radio as a backup. Will swap out the CD Player Not sure if there is a fix for the old unit or not. At least I will have new warranted OEM units.

Daughter snapped the pivot clip on the rear vent window latch. Found an OEM unit and replace it. Works great again.

I received the New OEM Radio and CD Player. I had them swapped out in about 20 minutes. Everything works great and I have a full compliment of back lights!

Now to order the $8.95 replacement back lights for the old radio and solder them in, so I can store it for a possible replacement. As for the old CD Player, not sure yet what to do about that.
