Converting 4l60 4wd to 2wd
Sorry can't find the old post. I have the4l80e 4wd to 2wd post but what options do I have for 4l60e tranny to swap 4wd to 2wd drive? Here in Iowa the 4wd are everywhere 10:1 compared to the 2wd models. I found 5.3 but guy won't split it from tranny and tcase. I was wondering if I could just unbolt the tcase and mount a end cap. My truck has 2pc drive shaft. I been reading online & FB different places one person says can't be done but the next guy says he didn't but don't have info if how to do it.

Pull front pump first set of clutchs, remove snap ring output shaft will fall out, instal 2wd outputshaft and tail housing no other way

thanks, I have never opened a tranny up before but have put several small blocks together. is this a cut and drop job you would say?

There are a couple really important steps that if you do them wrong it won't go anywhere or make a mess.
No real special tools needed. What year transmission? '96 and newer have a bolt-on bell housing that you might have to buy a special socket to remove.

In the pic will show the removalable bell housing on the 4L60E transmission

Remove the o-ring on the input shaft, in the pic the o-ring is on the bench.

Next remove the PWM sensor located by the TCC solenoid by using a small screw driver and pull out the clip that holds the sensor in the VB. This must be done to allow access to the two 10 mm bolts that hold the TCC solenoid to the case. Once the sensor is removed, remove the 2 10 mm bolts holding TCC solenoid. Pull the TCC solenoid out of the pump

Once TCC solenoid is removed.
Remove the pump bolts. If you have the input sensor this will need to be disconnected prior to removing the pump. Pump is ready to be removed from trans case. If you do not have a pump puller which most people reading this will not have you can simply pry the pump out of the case with a screw driver. But be careful. Don’t go crazy prying against the case. In this pic you should notice there is no pump body o-ring, this is a 2007 model 4l60e which has a wedge seal that fits into the trans case.
Continue to pull pump assembly out of the trans case (To the left in the pic, you will notice the connector for the input sensor which I mentioned in a previous post) "make sure you disconnect this connector prior to removing the pump" only if you have this.... Next remove the 2/4 servo assembly
Remove the snap ring holding the servo cover. There are two places in the case which will allow you access to this snap ring. Simply use a screw driver and pry up on this snap ring and remove it Use a set of channel locks and twist the cover out far enough to have access to the cover o-ring, take a small screw driver and get under the o-ring to cut the o-ring (see pic) pull on one end of the o-ring to remove the o-ring from the cover. With the 2/4 servo assembly removed this will make it a bit easier to remove the reverse input drum and the input shaft as one piece. Take a screw driver and push the 2/4 band off the anchor pin holding the band around the reverse input drum. Pull out the two drums mentioned above (during this activity make sure the trans is sitting on the bench with the VB facing up, this helps with accessing the anchor pin area)
Remove the 2/4 band out of the trans case At this point you will have access to the snap ring holding the front planet to the output shaft. With a good set of snap ring pliers remove the snap ring holding the front planet onto the output shaft. Pull the front planet off the output shaft.... To make it easier to pull the output shaft and to install the 2wd output shaft You can pull out the 3/4 clutch hub, sunshell, and sun gear. Leaving the center support/low and reverse clutches/rear planet and ring gear in the trans case.
In the first pic below, you will see the 4x4/2wd output shafts, snap ring, front planet, 3/4 clutch hub, sunshell removed and on the bench.... In the second pic the center support is left in the case. Dive in everybody......got pics.... Last edited by YoungPup1977; 04-14-2018 at 12:29 AM. |

in the pic below shows the difference in a 4x4 and a 2wd output shaft. The longer shaft is for a 2wd.
Hope this helps. If you want more on assembly of the trans I can provide the information along with pics if anybody would like. If you are unsure of the condition of the clutches and other parts, you may want to inspect them before reassembly. Items to gather up before reassembly: Tail housing to fit the 2wd option, along with new bushing, case to tail housing o-ring and seal Front pump gasket, o-ring,seal,bushing (wedge seal, depending on year of trans) 2/4 servo cover o-ring pan gasket and filter There are o-rings on the pump bolts along with the input shaft o-ring, TCC solenoid o-ring...(these o-rings come in the rebuild kit, maybe bought separate from a trans parts store) Depending on condition of trans, you may want to buy a rebuild kit and go thru it for ease of the mine......along with a shift kit....where do we stop ? Good info. I just want to add the torx tool for removing bell housing is a “T-50 torx plus”
A common torx 50 will not work.

The pic below shows the difference in 2wd/4x4 shafts for a 700r4 and the 4L60E

No. There are 4x4 shafts which are shorter than 2wd output shafts. Plus I haven’t measured every output shaft out there so I can not say yes to your question One needs to ensure the tail housing matches the length of the 2wd output shaft.
Plus you have company’s out there making special length output shafts like advance adapters For an example, the 700r4 being installed mating up with a np205. The output shaft is shorter than the factory GM 4x4 700r4 output shaft As far as the output shaft itself, if you look at it from the "Trans case bushing" towards the front planetary they are all the same. Yes I understand the 4wd shaft versus 2wd shaft differences. So basically if one were to convert a 4wd 4L60E to 2wd, as long as you use the 2wd output shaft and the tail housing from the same 700R4, it should work?
