4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
Hi All.
Thinking about doings this work myself - I know its a teardown (but not a rebuild). Coming out of a H2 vehicle with only 60k miles. Process seems somewhat simple .... high level <REMOVE IN ORDER> PUMP WASHER AND PUMP GASKET 2ND GEAR BAND and BAND ANCHOR REVERSE DRUM INPUT DRUM TOP PLANET SUN GEAR SNAP RING OUTPUT SHAFT Put in 2WD shaft and reassemble. Any good links on process - figure someone has done this before. 1) Any tips/hints 2) Any special tools ? 3) Any other considerations ? thanks !!

I would put an offer to trade up on craigslist locally before I'd tear down a working transmission, but that's just me.

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
You can do this without pulling the Valve body off the case, you mentioned band anchor above which is under the VB...
To make it a bit easier to get the 2/4 band out and back in...remove the 2/4 servo from the side of the case. Dont forget to pull out the TCC solenoid before pulling the pump out, if it has the Input speed sensor on the stator make sure you disconnect the connector too. What year is this 4L65E ? Good Luck ! You basically have a trans from a Tahoe. They are cheap. Sell it and buy a 2wd version or swap someone. There is nothing special about that trans being out of a wannabe "Hummer" (H2 = Tahoe).

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
Pretty sure at a minimum I'll replace the shaft and tail housing.
I probably will just do a revuild anyways if it's OEam inside to just fix some week points like the sun shell and the 3/4 clutches and maybe a new VB. Figure I'm this far into this build .... Whats anither few weeks. Any recommendations youngpup ?

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
If you are planning to pull the VB off the case, than I would recommend installing a good shift kit, these 4l60/65/70's need it...

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
Sure ... increase the line pressure
Just a transgo shift kit enough ? Was also goign to do the 3/4 and the sunshell ...... anything else ? Sounds about right for a slighlty better than stock build.

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
Since you have it apart, I would put a wider sun gear bushing made by SONNAX
Upgrade your forward sprag and install Kolene steels along with upgraded clutches, you can buy different 3/4 clutch packs if you like....you can increase the number of clutches if you like as well... The transgo shift kit will change this 4L65E in a great way, it upgrades the 2/4 servo but you can buy different 2/4 servo's if you like as well.... Upgrade your 2/4 band Sand the reverse input drum 2/4 band surface, (same thing like replacing a clutch in a manual car, always resurface the flywheel)...... there are many more upgrades I will add more as time goes on.... I can add pics if you like.... thanks for listening, and Good Luck !! |

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
Check out the pic, it shows the difference in a 5 pinion front and rear planetary gears to the 4 pinion....your 4L65E may or may not have the 5 pinion planetary gears, its a nice upgrade if you plan on "USING" the transmission....

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
But then you wouldn't be on here asking how to do it. as the OP is. As you own your own trans shop, I doubt that you would only be changing the output on a "free" transmission...lol.

Re: 4WD to 2WD 4l65e from Hummer
Sorry - not sure why I don't always get the updates.
I pickup the engine/trans on Wednesday. I *think* I am at least going to bench tear it down and organize each section into their own seperate plastic buckets. I will inspect the hardparts as well as the fluid. If everything looks ok I will probably 1) Increase the 3/4 clutch count and maybe new clutches depending as it just requires a screwdriver I believe 2) Validate the 5 pinion sun gear - I believe the 4l65e already has it though 3) Add a Sonnax Servo and do a transgo VB upgrade and new 2/3 band 4) replace shaft and tailhousing and get a new VSS Since the truck will only be stock lq4 (Around 275 RWHP) think this will be enough for now. Later ....... if I add a cam I'll tear into it again if needed and/or do a 4l80e swap. Something like that - but still researching and subject to change Seems like a good way to tear into trans and get what I need without much cost. Learn for the next one - which is about 50/50% chance of being 2 weeks after I start driving it if I miss something I'll start a thread both here and at LS1TECH if I pull the pin. Figure only one way to learn.

Makco Trans Parts, They have what you need at the site above, look around on this site, they will have exactly what you need from stock to high performance. I like sonnax stuff, its hard to beat. But again, my opinion. As far as the 2/4 servo, I always change the servo to either a corvette style or even super servo depending on the application...if you go stock cam, use the corvette servo. again, thanks for listening.... |
