Note to self: Always remove the jack stands out from under the rear end before taking truck for a test drive.....


I go and get in the truck to leave...put the truck in gear & truck does NOT move..I forgot I had the truck rear up on jack stands.

In all the years I've worked on vehicles, I have NEVER did that....DUH !!!

My age is catching up with me.....lol

Maybe I should take up "needle pointing"

The best mechanic I ever knew was my Grand Daddy. Once in high school I saw him change oil in his LTD & forgot to re-install the drain plug. I was shocked & couldn't figure how he could have let that happen.
I KNOW now, we all got it comin...

we did that to a buddies truck in the mall parking lot. Just high enough so tires were off. Then we sat and waited... He thinks it was funny, now....

I believe we have all had a DUH moment, at one time or another. If a Thread ever got started or people posted on this one, to keep it going, I bet there would be some good stories!!

I changed oil on a car once and didn't slide the drain pan out far enough so when I went to lower it down, the tire hit it and flipped up and got oil all over the side of the car......... oil change= 15 minutes..... clean up = over an hour.

I worked at an engine shop when I was 19. My boss took a 64 Impala off the jack stands one day when I was at lunch. I came back and he was mad because the rebuilt engine I had installed was knocking so bad he could not let it run for more than a couple revolutions. He should have let me take it off the stands because I had one more under the oil pan that I used with a jack on the tranny pan to help align them for re-connection. So he let the car down on the last stand and buggered up the pan pretty good so it was hitting the crank. The other guy there cranked up my first engine rebuild with no filter on it.Once fixed it still ran really good. I am glad I stopped working there.

Spent two days replacing the prop valve in my K20 after an axle swap because the brakes wouldn't release. After all the work and cussing and bloody knuckles, the new one did the same thing! Shortly thereafter, I realized the parking brake was on. The "temporary" tach I mounted on the column was blocking the brake indicator light. I'd like to say this was way back when, but unfortunately it was this past winter.

OMG, that's awesome thank you for sharing and making all of us feel less ahem stupid... I had a similar situation except with wheel chucks under the rear wheels after a recent Z bar clutch adjustment in my driveway, I was like what the heck did just happen how much did I mess this clutch up, now the truck won't move... so I get the feeling

The first time I changed oil in my Yukon the oil filter was on so tight I had to destroy it to get it removed. I didn’t notice the gasket remained on the block. I installed the new filter right on top of it (double gasket), when I fired the engine it blew oil through the seem between them and took hours to clean up.

Last week we loaded a big hammer off an excavator into the back of a dump truck. The dump truck bed had water in it. I climbed in the truck, and thought to myself, I can't pull out on the road and dump that water. I raised the bed and dumped the hammer we had just loaded.

Many many years ago, one of my sisters asked me to check the brakes on her car. I pulled a front drum, saw that they were OK, and put it back together. Not long after she left, I realized that when I had pulled the drum, the inner wheel bearing and seal had popped out of the hub. I had been working on it in the dark, in the driveway with a drop light. Luckily, she felt the problem and came right back. The drum was rubbing on the backing plate! Time does not erase that embarrassment.

That green truck up on 2 bys is a sketchy set-up. I've seen that picture many times. But looking closer, what is he doing? Is he welding the gas tank or right by it? That's a slick way to hold a truck up and all that, but Golly. That could be dangerous!!

When I quit running the place about seven years ago, I built a shop and moved all my stuff out back, desk and all.

They pay me to stay away. I go in the front office and complain about how they are doing things a couple times a week to make them feel like they are getting their money's worth.

Yesterday they had a heavy haul over to Eureka Springs that sounded interesting, and I asked if I needed to do it. It got too complicated so I told them to send somebody else and I took my wife on a picnic and media blasted the inner fenders to my K10.

Oh yeah, I didn't share the hammer story with her. She's already convinced I'm incompetent.
