It is funny, most days I can't tell you what I had for lunch but things like this as well as the space shuttle explosion I know exactly where I was and what I was doing. Weird how the brain works sometimes.

Ive told this story many times but I was in Brooklyn 7 miles as the bird flies working on a roof that day and saw the whole thing. Several friends were at the world trade center that day all are safe one was one of the last out before the second tower fell. Several of my motorcycle buddies were on the pile sadly all have gotten sick and some have passed since. At the time I lived next door to a retired FDNY guy who for the next year went to almost every funeral.. 9/11 was a horrible day and we cannot let the world forget. Last night on TV I heard George Bush Jr say how eventually this will become like Pearl Harbor Day, a footnote in our history.. This cannot happen. Don't let those who call our remembering and the lesson learned here be described as hate.. Always remember and Always be vigilant to make sure that this never happens again

I never really never like to say anything about this day, it still causes a replay tape in my head ,but after all these years maybe I should , I was in the vicinty myself and my Union brothers went in to the site right after the aftermath , I am getting to emotional thats all I can say.God bless

It is a day I remember all too well. Where I was when I first heard and what I was doing.

Sadly, Bush Jr. is correct. As the generations pass this will become a footnote in our history because those of us that lived it will not be here to talk about it. Just like Pearl Harbor. All we can do is the best we can with the time that is given to us. Pass as much of this along to the next generation so at least some will have an understanding of what happened and the impact.

What I wish I would see is the coming together as a nation that happened in the months afterward. Sadly, I think too many have gotten their wish and the cracks have become canyons.

As a nation, whatever our differences are, we must forever be vigilant so to not allow this kind of assault on our country, our people ever again.
That rocket that exploded outside the American embassey yesterday in Afghanistan on the eve of 9/11 is a chilling reminder for us. There are those who will not stop trying to kill as many of us as they can.
God bless America and all those who serve to protect this country and our way of life.

My brother in law was there. He was a NY state court officer and was doing his yearly training. They were sent over just before the second hit. And since he was a lieutenant in the Middletown fd they had him report to the NYFD. He got out just before the first tower fell. We didnt hear from him for two days . Just the initial call that he was going to the site.

He had to walk to Brooklyn to get a call out on a NYPD landline .

And it was very sad seeing cars sitting in the metro north parking lot for days. They towed out about 10 cars. Those people never returned

Remember the firefighters and emts. Remember the police officers and port authority officers. Then remember the 2000+ who were innocent victims. As a recently retired fireman, I felt that I never truly filled the boots of those FDNY guys.

Until recently I didn't understand the "never forget" rant. Why would we forget, we didn't seem to have this problem with Pearl Harbor.

But now I get it, because many on one side of center supports ideas and actions demonstrating they've forgotten or don't care. Such as throwing our police force under the bus, opening the gates to uncontrolled immigration, voting Muslims into office who detest this country & Israel, a justice department and deep state that undermines everything from the Executive office to SCOTUS, and policies attempting to derail our Constitution.

I was on active duty at the time. I knew instantly that we would be headed to war and that I would be there.

I now teach Junior ROTC. This is the first year that none of my cadets was even born when the September 11th attacks occurred. It's harder to teach the significance of the date to them because it seems so far away to them.

You hit the nail on the head.

I think unless you have been witness to an atrocity like 9/11 or Pearl Harbor, whether in person or riveted to your TV and radio for the days and weeks that followed, experiencing the fear, the rage, the courage, the selflessness, compassion and unity that was seen everywhere and have continued on bearing the scars from that period in time, then you cannot truly understand the importance remembering that day. The unity of this country at that time is something that I will never forget. The scars are our reminders.

It changed all of us.

Every anniversary, I watch the barrage of clips on tv, the documentaries and witness accounts. It keeps it fresh in my mind. My 3 younger kids will watch with me sometimes but like you said Truckster, they don't really get the significance. They can't. They haven't lived through it. They do however see the pain in my face as I tell them the stories surrounding that day and they do know that its something that's very important to Dad. Just like when my folks would tell me about Pearl Harbor and I could see the anguish in their faces 30+ years later.

I for one cannot forget.

Gosh dangit man! I think we are tip toeing here trying to keep the political crap out of this so it doesn't get closed and we lose the intent of the thread.
But #$&%! ..................................... it's hard. I don't want politics to overshadow those innocent souls who lost their lives or suffer health issues from that day as a result of the actions of a group of cowards. Toby Keith called it what it is "a sucker punch from somewhere in the back". They hide among women and children and target the innocent.
I'll stop here. I'm getting too worked up over this again.

I don't know … 12-7-41 was a dozen years before I hit the ground, but I grew up learning the significance of Pearl Harbor and WW2. They were still fighting the war on TV and the movies all through the 1950s and 1960s.

I still have never owned a Japanese car. The name "Mitsubishi" still prickles me.

We were much more in tune with our history and still proud of our country back then...

I will always mourn 911 and Pearl Harbor. I can forgive a fair fight. These two were anything but.
